Agreed, you can sink many hours into trying to get the native menu working whereas Classic Start is a breeze (with more control, flexibility and functionality)
Michael Posted December 2, 2016 Posted December 2, 2016 Trust me when I say I have many years of experience and I lost many hours trying to get it to work I don't think anyone (even on Edugeek) has demonstrated a working/consistent method you can deploy with an image, but also easily change the layout once machines are deployed. For example, you have numerous Office 2016 shortcuts, but then how easy will it be to replace/update these with Office 2018/19 shortcuts when it arrives? With Classic Shell it's very straight forward and consistent.

The key is how you save the file, it MUST be saved as encoding type UTF-8 xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/Start/2014/LayoutModification" xmlns:defaultlayout="http://schemas.microsoft.com/Start/2014/FullDefaultLayout" xmlns:start="http://schemas.microsoft.com/Start/2014/StartLayout" xmlns:taskbar="http://schemas.microsoft.com/Start/2014/TaskbarLayout" Version="1"> I should note that it has always worked for me even in 1511. Michael Posted December 4, 2016 Posted December 4, 2016 Unfortunately it's not as clear cut as that - Start look for shortcuts (reading other posts), in other areas of the system (ProgramData) top of my head. What makes it worse is it gives different results on different users, different devices all built from the same core image. It's just an absolute disaster and Microsoft (it appears) don't seem to acknowledge it in the slightest. At the very least if so many professionals are struggling to create a custom/deployable Start Menu, then maybe a utility should be created, but again this hasn't happened either. Other issues I ran into is trying to change the layout at a later date, rather than at the point of deployment. Again it was well documented (especially on earlier builds) that this also was problematic.

Cheers Within Classic Shell Settings, navigate to the 'Customize Start Menu' tab. To the right of 'User Files' select 'Don't display this item' from the drop down menu. This then forms part of the regedit you can import using GPP - HKCU > SOFTWARE > IvoSoft > ClassicStartMenu > Settings - MenuItems7. Copy/paste the contents of this into your GPP policy. 1
