Papercut set up

Morning,

 

I am needing my memory jogged here. We have just entered a new contract with new copiers with embedded Papercut. Now if I remember correctly (it was three years ago in which I had done this) I created two virtual queues (colour and mono) and redirected the print jobs to the physical device in which they were then released from. I'm sure I had the "hold/release" settings where applied to each of the physical device tab. The new company has placed the hold/release settings to the virtual queues only. One thing I have noticed is that the jobs to take a little bit longer to release. I am wondering if I was to remove the hold/release from the virtual and transfer that setting to the physical devices it might perk the process up slightly.

 

Just want to check if anyone who has a virtual queue set up and where they use the hold/release function?

We had it setup on the virtual queue so the job can be released from any of the 'follow me' printers. Otherwise, set on the device, people can only release it from the device they send it to.

 

If you are printing to a single device you shouldn't need a virtual queue?

Yes we have a mixture of setups like admin and SLT print directly to the device as they have no embedded papercut licences on their devices.

I was meaning should in the follow me environment, should the hold release tick box be set at the virtual queue level OR the physical device level?

I am running Papercut MF. My virtual queues are set to default to duplex, and black and white only. If users want colour, on non duplex, then they have to explicit set those setting (printer properties in the print dialogue), at the time of printing. I have to use two queues because the same printer driver will not speck to both Canon, and Ricoh MFD's.

Hold and release needs to be on your virtual queue, check that the hardware check box isnt ticked as this can slow things down unless you need 1000% accurate reporting this isn't important, also same is it a standard TCP/IP port of PaperCut port as they can both hinder things.

 

Which brand of machines are you using now?

 

Don't forget to go into your devices and tell them that they can pick up theirs jobs from the new virtual queues.

1st ensure you have a real printer queue for each of your printers under printers tab.

 

Then the device(as listed under devices tab) needs to be enabled on your virtual queue under printers tab.

 

Then under device tab > device name ensure the device is enabled for follow me printing. Then (same page) enable/allow all the virtual queues for release on each device. On this page you also have to tell the printer to release jobs a printer queue which points at itself. Hopefully you have named the printer queues for each device the same as the device name.

 

This will then allow users to release jobs from the selected queues on the device they are logged into.

 

If you don't setup the follow me printing correctly on the device tab you will find papercut will randomly choose a follow me printer!
