korifugi Posted April 4, 2017 Posted April 4, 2017 (edited) Palm oil is the prime cause of the endangered status of the orangutan. So, ignoring your rather odd use of italics on the word "linked", I would say that people who are complaining have a point. I'd prefer no £20 note rather than killing off more orangutans. Sorry - yes, this I get. Apologies if I've been misunderstood. My point is - surely there's a way to produce palm oil that doesn't endanger orangutans. Just because something has a history like that doesn't mean it can't be produced without further endangerment. Edited April 4, 2017 by korifugi beterrer terminology
elsiegee40 Posted April 4, 2017 Posted April 4, 2017 I think the Bank of England is making a point. There are difficult decisions around the use of any material. The new notes are not biodegradable for example and could in theory be a pollution problem - most people won't be littering the countryside with tenners so it's unlikely to be an issue. The ingredients used to make the notes also have ethical decisions. My guess is that they're testing public opinion... where are we on half a cow versus an area of rainforest being chopped down? Personally, I think half a cow has less impact environmentally
localzuk Posted April 4, 2017 Posted April 4, 2017 Personally, I'd like to see us migrate away from a cash society... But that's probably decades away.
sparkeh Posted April 4, 2017 Posted April 4, 2017 surely there's a way to produce palm oil that doesn't endanger orangutans. Yep, there is sustainable palm oil. Sustainable palm oil | RSPO - Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil
localzuk Posted April 4, 2017 Posted April 4, 2017 Yep, there is sustainable palm oil. Sustainable palm oil | RSPO - Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil Except there is disagreement over that very scheme - Destructive palm oil company IOI let off the hook too easily by RSPO | Greenpeace UK
