Hey all,

I've got a dvd of the sims folder from our old sims SQL server. I need to get into SIMS to get at some archived data out that wasnt moved onto CMIS when we migrated.

When I try to run launcher i get the error "wing.dll missing" and then it closes launcher.

We have managed to get it to run with SIMS.net in the past but it doesnt give you the reports that the office staff are asking for.

I've been told that it is possible to get it to run on a stand alone machine but there has to be something wrong that i'm doing. I have made a fresh installation of sims common platform with all the modules and replaced the STAR and system folders as i was shown before, but it still dies.

Anyone got any ideas or experience with getting sims to run on a standalone machine?

Thanks,

Joe

It's a known issue...solution(s) from Capita are:

====================

KB470 - Unable to load WING.DLL - Launcher

Created 23/04/2002

Last Updated 08/11/2005

Affected Products Launcher

Notes

FACTS

SIMS Launcher (All versions)

S42

In this solution, where a path for SIMS is given, S: denotes the drive letter on which the SIMS applications run.

SYMPTOMS

Error :

Unable to load WING.DLL

the above message appears when the user tries to run Launcher

The following error can also occur when running Launcher:

Error 105 Setup is unable to run an intermediate file needed to proceed with the installation

Advice Check to make sure that WING.DLL isn't hidden.

Check that each machine can only see 1 copy of WING.DLL as follows:

1. Click on Start | Find | Files or Folders

2. Type wing.dll in the 'named' field

3. Click on the small down arrow at the end of the 'Look in' box

4. Click on the up arrow key and select My Computer

5. Click on the 'Find now' button

6. If there is more than one copy of the file listed under the 'Name' column in the lower half of the 'Find' window all copies need to be deleted except for the following:

a. For a Win95 machine the one that resides in C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM

b. For a WinNT/Win2000 machine the one that resides in C:\WINNT\SYSTEM

Windows 95

On a Win95 machine if C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\WING.DLL does not exist run workstation setup as follows:

a. Click on START|RUN

b. In the 'Open' box type: S:\SIMS\WSSETUP\WSSETUP.EXE

(where N denotes the drive letter SIMS applications reside)

Windows NT/Windows 2000/Windows XP

On a WinNT/Win2000/WinXP machine if C:\WINNT\SYSTEM\WING.DLL does not exist then run workstation setup as follows

a. Click on START|RUN

b. In the 'Open' box type: S:\SIMS\WSSETUP\WSSETUP.EXE

(where N denotes the drive letter SIMS applications reside)

3. Reboot the machine and try running Launcher again.

Change the Video Driver as follows:

1. On a WIN95 machine:

a. Click on START|SETTINGS|CONTROL PANEL|DISPLAY

b. Click on the SETTING tab

c. Click on the ADVANCED PROPERTIES button

d. Click on the CHANGE button

e. Click on the button SHOW ALL DEVICES

f. The windows will now be split into 2 white panes

g. In the left Pane, manufacturers, select STANDARD DISPLAY TYPES

h. In the right Pane, models, select SUPER VGA

i. Click on OK

j. Click on Apply

k. Click on OK

l. Click on Apply

m. Click on Yes to restart the machine

2. On a WinNT machine:

a. Click on START|SETTINGS|CONTROL PANEL|DISPLAY

b. Click on the SETTING tab

c. Click on the display type button

d. Click on the CHANGE button

e. The windows will now be split into 2 white panes

f. In the left Pane, manufacturers, select STANDARD DISPLAY TYPES

g. In the right Pane, display, select VGA compatible display adapter

h. Click on OK

i. At this point the user may need to insert the NT workstation CD-ROM and follow the onscreen instructions.

If none of the solutions work then it means there is a problem with the Windows installation.

Windows will need to be re-installed on each of the workstations affected.

-- Standalone

Check that the patch level on the stand-alone box is the same as was on the old server. Get it running with the default (empty) database before you transfer any of the data from the DVD.

Thanks, i'll give it a try tommorow if i get a chance or take the stuff home over the weekend to do it.

The patch level thing seems to be the glaringly obvious answer i hadnt thought about.
