Open putty, select serial and then change the com port. On a 5412, surely they should have an RJ45 not a 9pin serial connection (DB9) Make sure the serial is using 9600 baud, Data bits 8, Stop Bits 1, Parity None and Flow control can be none. Basically Cisco console settings should work. Maybe the person who changed the IP address did not save it and on a reboot it went back to startup config, hence now not same IP for management vlan. Looks like a DB9 to me. 1

winng Posted November 22, 2016 Author Posted November 22, 2016 For HP, once connected correctly with hyperterminal and on the prompt, try the following: Type “menu”, hit Enter Select “Switch Configuration” Select “IP Configuration” Navigate to Edit, hit Enter Change the IP and then Save Hi, I'm back again.... I've purchased a serial to serial cable as getting nowhere with the usb one. I've plugged it into my old laptop port and the switch port. So far so good. I've connected with HyperTerminal - at least it says I'm connected. But despite there being a blinking prompt, I can't enter any commands? Any further ideas please?

winng Posted November 22, 2016 Author Posted November 22, 2016 Thanks for the speedy responses. I'm sitting here next to the switch, laptop on lap, etc. and it's getting chilly... Still no signs of life.... despite saying I have a connection.
CAWJames Posted November 22, 2016 Posted November 22, 2016 have you been into device manager and checked it is actually COM1? Can you download Putty and use the serial connection on that? What cable are you using? Is it the proper HP one, not all serial cables are the same..
winng Posted November 22, 2016 Author Posted November 22, 2016 I've tried using putty and hyperterminal - both make a connection but don't allow any commands to get things moving. It's not the HP one as we can't locate that....... I've bought a cable on eBay....... May try the reset and clear process again.....

CAWJames Posted November 22, 2016 Posted November 22, 2016 Follow the factory reset, if thats what you want, but it will clear all, and depending on the switch, I know some don't have a web gui until you specifically go in and set one, which means without a working console connection, you effectively have a dumb switch until you can connect. Also be aware if you have VLANS and everything suddenly can connect on the one flat lan, DHCP may go mad, depending on what is connected and how they are set up.

In this state, it can be managed only through a direct console connection. To manage the switch through inband (networked) access, you should configure the switch with an IP address and subnet mask compatible with your network. Also, you should configure a Manager password to control access privileges from the console and web browser interface. Other parameters in the Switch Setup screen can be left at their default settings or you can configure them with values you enter. 1

PS _ I've flattened the network so only want the one, default vlan.
