Hard drive recovery

A teacher has come in with a nasty sounding external drive - standard no to the have you got your info anywhere else.

 

Any ideas on anything I can try? Or any recommendations on data recovery in Surrey?

Not in Surrey, but, used them for data recovery on a dead external drive and had it back within a week of posting to them. Price was ok too and included another ext drive. Hope this helps

You could get lucky if you take the drive out of the case and connect it via USB and another connector - it has helped me in the past

but if it sound like metal scraping on platters .......

As dismissive as it may sound, I'd give them a few contact options and walk away from the job - if it's not school owned. This could end up being very painful for you otherwise - if your actions directly or indirectly make it worse you could have a major backlash/liability.

There are a couple of steps you can take that won't damage the drive or effect chances of recovery.

Firstly remove it from the external case. Plug it directly using SATA to a PC. Boot the PC using a Live Linux disc.

Does the drive now mount ?

There is also unscrewing the PCB and cleaning the oxidised contacts with a rubber than can be done.

I'd then check the two TVS diodes on the 12v and 5v lines.

 

All non invasive, non data damaging or recovery attempt impeding.
