Is there anything of value on any .io domain? I think I once found a useful site - and it was one that I didn't think was of any use to the school - so block all of them by default. Don't use Smoothwall, though.

With more sites using random TLDs as part of their name blocking an entire TLD is not the right thing to do IMO.

Google made .io a gccTLD so it's used by lots of websites now (especially tech startups).

 

draw.io and github.io immediately come to mind.

You're assuming that the LEA filter is that sophisticated! It doesn't even do group-based filtering! I had to write my own .pac file to provide more flexible filtering for the kids (time-based blocking, recognises wildcards).

 

It's a Junior school, so while those sites may be of potential use to adults, I don't think I'll be looking at revisiting the block soon. The kids seemed to have a vast list of .io game sites that didn't fall under the "Games" block on the filter (gota.io, slither.io - though I notice these are now blocked at LEA level). I figure that if an adult can't get to a legitimate .io site then I can add an exception line. Bit clunky, but heaven forfend that we should use someone other than the LEA for filtering.

 

Edit: Just realised that it's only the kids who get the homebrew .pac with the block so I'll wait until one of them actually finds a legitimate site!
