Jawloms Posted November 14, 2016 Posted November 14, 2016 im just going to leave this here (i have no speakers so audio might be nsfw i dont know) I worked in Woolworths whilst at college 20 years ago and we got one of these in every Christmas. We never sold it though as every year someone would open it because they didn't believe it was a real one. They used to also do 1.5kg Chocolate Oranges. It was slightly smaller than a football, but the segments on that were hollow.
6Foot2 Posted December 30, 2016 Posted December 30, 2016 Link: KitKat maker gives three fingers the thumbs down [The Guardian] ...Dame Fiona Kendrick, Nestlé’s boss in the UK and Ireland, said the four-fingered version of the much-loved biscuit bar would not be reduced to three to lower costs. “Not while I’m sitting here as chairman and CEO [chief executive],” she told BBC Radio 4’s Today programme. In November, the makers of Toblerone outraged fans by revealing plans to widen the gaps between the chocolate bar’s triangular chunks in an effort to avoid raising its prices. Mondelez International said higher costs for ingredients meant it was cutting the weight of two bars in Toblerone’s UK range. It has reduced 400g bars to 360g and 170g bars to 150g to maintain retail prices...
6Foot2 Posted January 12, 2017 Posted January 12, 2017 Link: Toblerone maker to hike price of Cadbury's Freddo bars The company which cut the weight of Toblerone bars by widening the gaps between the chocolate peaks is now slapping a 20% price rise on Cadbury’s Freddo bars. The recommended retail price of the chocolate frogs, which weigh 18g (0.6oz), is scheduled to jump from 25p to 30p in the spring. The US food manufacturing giant Mondelēz, which owns Cadbury, said it was having to make selective price increases as a “last resort”. The firm made a better than expected profit of $548m (£448m) in its last three-month financial period...

elsiegee40 Posted January 13, 2017 Author Posted January 13, 2017 (edited) This is terrible news. Tell me about it. Both my offspring are horrified that their childhood tiny 5p treat has gone up in price so much in the last 15 years. Edited January 13, 2017 by elsiegee40
DJ-1701 Posted January 13, 2017 Posted January 13, 2017 Can you still get penny sweets? Last time I saw penny chews, they were tuppence each over a decade ago... if they still exist, they are most likely at least 5 or 10p now.

When I were a lass you could 4 Black Jacks for a penny. Chews were two for a penny, so Black Jacks were my favourite pocket money spend as they were only slightly smaller. * Removes knotted hanky * 2

We used to try and sneak 5 past the shopkeeper! 1
FN-GM Posted January 13, 2017 Posted January 13, 2017 and much nicer than Black Jacks. What?? I am going to report that post for trolling!
Arthur Posted January 14, 2017 Posted January 14, 2017 Can you still get penny sweets? if they still exist, they are most likely at least 5 or 10p now. If you buy in bulk you can get Fruit Salad chews for £0.01843 each and Black Jacks for £0.01786. This is based on each chew weighing 2.6 grams. The money you save can then go towards your dentist bill. 1

Arthur Posted January 14, 2017 Posted January 14, 2017 (edited) So black jacks have increased in price by over 700% in 46 years If you account for inflation wouldn't the Black Jacks you buy today actually be cheaper than they were in 1971? Assuming my calculations are correct, 1 penny in 1971 is worth roughly 14p today. If you got four chews for a penny that makes each one cost the equivalent of 3.5p today (96% more expensive compared to the 2.25 kg box price in post #38)? Edited January 14, 2017 by Arthur elsiegee40 isn't 70!!! ;)
elsiegee40 Posted January 14, 2017 Author Posted January 14, 2017 If you account for inflation wouldn't the Black Jacks you buy today actually be cheaper than they were in 1946? Assuming my calculations are correct, 1 penny in 1946 (a.k.a. 1d) is worth roughly 16p today. If you got four chews for a penny that makes each one cost the equivalent of 4p today (124% more expensive compared to the 2.25 kg box price in post #38)? ^ 0.00416666666 = 1 / 240 I'm NOT that old. 46 years ago was 1971! Thank you very much! 1
Arthur Posted January 14, 2017 Posted January 14, 2017 (edited) I'm NOT that old. 46 years ago was 1971! Thank you very much! I'm not sure what happened there. For some reason I got 46 confused with 1946. :o Edit. Post edited with new prices! Sorry about that. Edited January 14, 2017 by Arthur
mikeprice Posted January 14, 2017 Posted January 14, 2017 I'm NOT that old. 46 years ago was 1971! Thank you very much! well no - but was the 1 penny 1p or 1d - kind of confusing around then (and yes I remember when a packet of crisps in the playground tuck shop was either 7d or 3p)

I used to get 5p a week pocket money post decimalisation:D

Arthur Posted July 21, 2018 Posted July 21, 2018 Resurrected as they are changing toblerone back It's almost as if Mondelēz planned this from the very start (or am I being too cynical? ). Going from 170g bars to 150g and then to 200g seems like a marketing ploy to get consumers to accept the inevitable higher price as long as they get their missing pieces of Toblerone back.
