Win 10 1607 Start Menu Shortcuts

On the latest Win10 build in the Start Menu are shortcuts which you can have to user's Documents. Downloads etc. On our network these don't appear. Is there anyway I can force this with a GPO?

You can customize the Start Layout through Group Policy using an XML file generated by the Export-StartLayout PowerShell cmdlet. You can read more about it here:

Thanks. I've tried this - but really looking for the personal folders like Download My Docs File Explorer etc that you get on the far left along with Shutdown/Log Off etc

Looks like those "Pinned Folders" cannot be configured using Group Policy according to https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/itpro/windows/manage/windows-10-start-layout-options-and-policies

 

I'd be curious to hear if you do find a way to configure that far left pane of the Windows 10 Start Menu using GPO! Good luck!

You can easily do this with Classic Shell, so all common folders are available directly on the Start Menu.

So a month down the line you need or want to make a change... you still can with Classic Shell at any time.

Can you give me more info on your solution. We use a third-party tool to prep our images, but hoping that I can use your solution with ours to make this happen.

What did you do to default profile and how? I asked the company that provides our solution and then suggesting using GPO and and XML file to set the Start Menu options. I'm looking into it, but not sure yet, if that is how to handle it. They said default profile is getting harder and harder to work with. So just tried to decide which way to hear.

 

I'm "fairly" familiar with imaging and application packages. We use ZENworks, ENGL (imaging add-on), and ZENworks for desktop management/applications. I have use SCCM, but on a limited basis, and WDS, even more limited, but understand the logic behind it and task sequences. Just need to translate that into a ZENworks environment.

Sorry for the delay, been a busy day... I will do I quick write-up tomorrow.

The excuse of the default profile is getting harder and harder to work with is a cop out, it isn't hard if you keep up-to-date with changes.

You can manage the start menu and pinned apps on start bar via group policy xml however I recommend against this as it leads to zero user customisation.

The icons on the far left of the start menu have to be done at default profile level before image capture along with 1 or 2 other basic tasks.

I then use a batch file in my SCCM task sequence to add/setup Desktop icons and folders as well as the start menu, E.G. Maths, English, etc... on the start menu and desktop icons for basic office and adobe apps.
