Laptop screen dims after few seconds-can see on external monitor

Toshiba Satellite laptop screen goes dim about 4/5 seconds after the power is turned on. Under light can see the laptop running. After checking few other posts of similar type, I connected with external monitor and the screen is there. If I extend (or duplicate) the monitor to laptop screen, it shows 4/5 seconds and then goes dim on the laptop screen. Edited October 30, 2016 by mnhuda

Also can you give us the model of the laptop and the version of Windows that it's running please

The backlight or inverter is probably on its way out, I doubt it's a power saving issue in the OS. New screen should sort it, unless it's old and the inverter is separate.

Browsing online, your screen is going to cost you around the CA$160 mark before tax, delivery and fitting. It's probably cheaper to use it with a separate monitor. Although that's not a portable solution.

A new screen should cost you just shy of £40 delivered for that model.

Get the make and model number from the back of the screen and call someone like Accupart.

Screen for Toshiba SATELLITE L500-02F. Replacement Laptop LCD Screens suggests it uses CCFL back lights, so the inverter is separate, and cheaper. The easiest way to be sure is plug a spare LCD screen in to the inverter to check. If it stays on you know the CCFLs have failed in your original LCD. If it goes out it's the inverter.

May be a long shot but check the bios, there is sometimes a setting for auto brightness - I had an issue once where I had to disable it (can't remember what make/model laptop tho)
