Nested My Documents

Got a weird one, and I'm not sure if this should be in the Windows forum or the server one.

 

We have students who are getting their My Documents folder moved to a new folder called "My Documents" within their existing My Documents folder. The bigger problem is that this 'move' keeps happening and we now have a student who clicks on their N drive, then clicks in there on a My documents folder, then within there another folder called My Documents, until they've done that seven times until they see their work! What on earth is going on? The profile path is set correctly and we are yet to see any patterns as to when this occurs.

 

Windows 7, Server 2012 (not R2). Any suggestions please?

Check your folder redirection.

In the properties of the user account, the "Home Folder" is set to connect "H" (not N as earlier stated) to "\\servername\student work$\Intake 12\evanek\My Documents", and then the redirect is "Basic - Redirect everyone's folder to the same location", and then the location is "Redirect to the user's home directory". That should be correct shouldn't it?

We use 'Create a folder for each user under the root path' and select the root share. We then use Follow the Documents folder on the other Libraries. This way is a little more explicit, and has less room for redirection weirdness (which we've also seen at times!) We do still get My Documents in the Documents (Xzibit style) folder for some users, but this is a legacy thing from old redirections.

The problem we have with doing that is that each year group is in a different folder on the server. Presumably the way you've got it either means everybody's My Documents from all years are lumped together in one folder, or you've got a different redirect policy for each year group? Or did I miss something?

Assuming your students are in a security group for each year group: advanced folder redirection - specify locations for various user groups and then within one redirection dialogue you can specify different folders for each security group. Only one gpo gets processed, and everyone gets their redirected folders.

They weren't in different security groups per year but are now. I've set up the advanced redirect based on group and will see how it goes. Thank you for your help.

Yes, ours are lumped together but as @Oaktech says using advanced folder redirection gives you some great flexibility.

Check the "move contents to new location" is not ticked in the folder redirection GPo
