On checking on WSUS I see it's at 99% and on investigation I see this: I don't understand if it's not approved why is it saying it's needed??
Steve21 Posted October 13, 2016 Posted October 13, 2016 Needed is just as it sounds Windows wants it Nothing to do with your approval or installation choices. (I think if you Decline them they disappear etc) By default Features Packs aren't auto approved on the rule. Steve 1

In WSUS-ese, "needed" translates to "available" when you run Windows update. Why they used different terminology ... We will never know. 1
kennysarmy Posted October 13, 2016 Author Posted October 13, 2016 Thanks. I think my WSUS needs some housekeeping - I've run the Server Clean Up Wizard but... There are still updates in the database from when we had XP, Server 2003 & 2008 - there are also a bunch of driver updates which all need deleting. Is it possible to remove these updates safely or is an uninstall and reinstall my best option to clean everything up? If that is the best course of action does anyone have guidance notes for doing this on Server 2012R2. Cheers.
Steve21 Posted October 13, 2016 Posted October 13, 2016 If you use the server cleanup wizard it should remove any unused/unneeded updates, will take ages to run though (sometimes few days) if you havent done it in a long time Steve

I think an uninstall and re-install might be my best to start afresh - just trying to establish the exact steps.

No need to reinstall etc. But the wizard should do it, You sure you don't have the old AD accounts still alive etc? So it thinks it's active? Steve

When you try to go in, it's highly likely it will time out - multiple times, keep mashing retry until it gets there. Un-select the products you no longer need. Then head over to spiceworks and grab OverDrive's maintenance script. It really works, and takes out all the rubbish

It really works, and takes out all the rubbish Only the following are ticked in Products and Classifications: PRODUCTS Office -> Dictionary Updates New Dictionaries Office 2010 Silverlight -> Sliverlight SQL Server -> SQL 2012 SQL 2005 SQL 2008R2 SQL Feature Pack Windows -> Windows 10 LTSB Windows 7 Windows IE8 Dynamic Installer Windows Media Dynamic Installer Windows Server 2008 R2 Windows Server 2012 R2 Windows Server 2012 CLASSIFICATIONS Critical Updates Security Updates Updates Other things may have been ticked in the past but this is how it looks now.

Steve If by AD accounts - you mean computer accounts - I don't think so - the number it reports is roughly how many PC's we have - no old ones - anything not reporting in gets removed by the clean up wizard. If I check Updates -> All Updates it shows 30,821 - seems a massive number! Even though I've declined all the driver updates that have got in there - they won't delete...hence wondering if the best thing was to start again... I'll good the reset command - cheers
pete Posted October 14, 2016 Posted October 14, 2016 Unticking something in Products & Classifications doesn't delete any updates it's already downloaded. You have to go in and decline them manually and then run the server cleanup routine.
