Quick question - Will installing a 2nd server disrupt my network?

Hi there,

 

The network is using Windows server 2008 for Active directory/printers.

 

however I plan on installing a windows 2012 server onto a virtual host. Would this disrupt current the network? The Virtual Host is a "standalone" windows 10 machine which is not domained.

 

I only want to set up a WSUS server which ill tell Clients (manually) to look there for updates.

 

 

 

--I'm only asking because I heard that installing another server could cause issues?

Not sure how well/if the whole thing would work with the setup you describe, but as long as you limit the new server's roles it shouldn't cause any issues. Many of us have multiple Virtual Servers handling different functions.

Sounds good. I thought it sounded normal to have multiple server for different roles but felt a hesitance to install this server... just in case.

as long as you dont set up a 2nd dhcp scope or reuse existing ips you should be fine

If you introduce a 2012 R2 Domain Controller into a domain that is a 2008 without doing a proper upgrade of the domain first you could end up mucking it up but for what you are doing no.

 

We have over 100 VM's here and the beauty of virtual is as long as you have the resources on the hosts you can split roles as far as you like. It means that if you want to say install a service that requires a reboot of a server you don't need to disrupt everyone using other resources/services on that server. If a service becomes corrupt and the server needs a rebuild you only need to fix that one issue.
