Data Recovery as opposed to Disaster Recovery solutions

Hi all,

 

I need to find a solution for long term data recovery.

 

I use Veeam B&R Ver 9 for Disaster Recovery and short term file level recovery whilst within the individual job retention periods but beyond that I'm stuck.

 

I'm interested to see what other use for this purpose.

 

Ideally I want to to take daily backups of the generic shared areas, staff / student home folders and some other specific areas. I want to keep 12 months of these backups.

 

We're a large school and the global area is 1.5TB in size.

 

I have considered doing a Forever Incremental backup on Veeam with 365 restore points but consider this to be a little risky but the overhead of creating synthetic full backups of full backups along the way is too heavy on resources.

 

Any sugestions welcome.

Why not just use Windows Server Backup ?

 

You can recover individual files and folders with it.

Volume Shadow Copies are enabled but won't offer the storage duration that is required.

Keeping a whole year's worth of daily backups sounds a little extreme IMO.

 

If you really want to be able to go that far back, I'd do two jobs. Have a Monday-Friday backup doing dailies, with say four weeks of restore points, then run a separate job last weekend of each month to do an "archive" backup. That gives you a years archive, and a daily backups for the last four weeks, but only using a total of 32(ish) restore points.
