pete Posted October 6, 2016 Posted October 6, 2016 So.... for reasons we won't debate in this thread, one of our cashless catering tills is a consumer-grade Asus tablet which has predictably now got slack/broken ports. If you're using a mobile till running Windows with a 3rd-party plug-in usb fingerprint reader, what've you got? Requirements are: Touchscreen 2 or more USB ports Netbook size (ish) Robust I'd be tempted to get a refurb X220 from Dave if it weren't for the touchscreen requirement.
p858snake Posted October 8, 2016 Posted October 8, 2016 Is there space to get a touchscreen monitor then put the netbook elsewhere (below the counter)?
pete Posted October 10, 2016 Author Posted October 10, 2016 Not really. It needs to roam between 3 different places, so self-contained is best.
p858snake Posted October 11, 2016 Posted October 11, 2016 Do you have enough space/budget to have a docking station at each location? That should make the ports survive for longer. Haven't used any of these solutions myself, But the first two were on a POS website when I was looking the other night for something else. * Hisense HM518 Rugged Tablet POS System (PDF) [Hardware stats look to be lacking) * HP ElitePad Pad (PDF) * MS Surface + Docking station
LeMarchand Posted October 11, 2016 Posted October 11, 2016 if the main problem is the USB port damage, couldn't you just use a couple of short extension cables? Peanuts to replace if they get damaged. Maybe you could use silicon sealant to make it difficult (but not impossible) to unplug them from the tablet.
