Nausing Posted October 5, 2016 Posted October 5, 2016 Hi all, The biggest request we hear from staff and students is to access their shares and emails from home. We have OWA set up but no share access. Any suggestions?? We have a very minimal Moodle setup but looking at a full VLE revamp.
stujham Posted October 6, 2016 Posted October 6, 2016 Agree with ITGuy, we have used for over 5years with little problem and there is plenty of documentation and also fairly simple to set up. "Project Description Home Access Plus+ Project, working with educational technicians to allow home access to files and other resources by just using a Web Browser or the Windows 8 Store App"
FN-GM Posted October 6, 2016 Posted October 6, 2016 In my opinion I wouldn't use Home Access Plus+. There has been no security audit been performed on the product. You are potentially exposing all your data to attackers. Im not knocking the product, I believe its very good. I am going to look at it as a way of accessing files on Chromebooks on the LAN. However I do have security concerns when publishing it to the internet. 1
skell Posted October 6, 2016 Posted October 6, 2016 I agree with FN-GM. I recently removed HAP from our network for this reason and went with Google Drive / OneDrive access and VPN access for staff.
danbuntu Posted October 6, 2016 Posted October 6, 2016 +1 one for Onedrive or google drive. the is also MS direct access: https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd759144(v=ws.11).aspx

danbuntu Posted October 6, 2016 Posted October 6, 2016 Chromeos also has this plugin available: https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/file-system-for-windows/mfhnnfciefdpolbelmfkpmhhmlkehbdf?utm_source=chrome-app-launcher-info-dialog Mileage will vary though and it's probably not a good idea for students.
FN-GM Posted October 6, 2016 Posted October 6, 2016 Its fine. Source code checks out. Do we have an audit report from a security company, export etc? Also there is the question about directly exposing a server on the production network to the internet.
ITGuyWestMidlands Posted October 6, 2016 Posted October 6, 2016 What, like frog? Firefly? Sharepoint? But wordpress is ok, right?
techy32 Posted October 6, 2016 Posted October 6, 2016 Microsoft Remote Desktop Services......easy to setup and cheap licences
FN-GM Posted October 6, 2016 Posted October 6, 2016 What, like frog? Firefly? Sharepoint? But wordpress is ok, right? Im not really sure what your talking about. But none of the above would be directly exposed to the internet on any network I manage. For example in that past when Sharepoint was being used it was published via a web application proxy. If you like open a thread about it as we are hijacking this one.
sparkeh Posted October 6, 2016 Posted October 6, 2016 VPN or Direct Access if you have access to Enterprise versions of Windows. Both are good options.
mdrabble Posted October 6, 2016 Posted October 6, 2016 If you have noodle you can use the SMB block plugin http://moodle.org/plugins/block_smb_web_client. It allows access to shares such has shared drives/home folders.
nigel_ford Posted October 17, 2016 Posted October 17, 2016 Foldr. VERY VERY easy to set up in school - make shared folders accessible to specific groups or everyone, and apps available for Apple/Android
