Google Cast for Education - no devices ...

Hi all

 

I've just spoken to 2 Google support guys now and the upshot is they say Cast for Education won't work connecting via a proxy. I knew this was the case for the device itself, but didn't realise it was so for the extension. That seems daft seeing it's actually meant for an education setting ... has anyone got this working?

Haven't had issues here on Chromebooks or Chrome browser on Win7. Has the teacher given permission to the pupils access to cast via the app? Either individually or via their class?

Works fine here. There is a 'Allow' bit that comes up for students when they use cast for the first time - must OK this for things to come up. Does not work across sub-domains yet if you have them. You also need to be on Chrome/ChromeOS 52+ for it to work. Don't know about proxies as we use Securly offsite filtering (being Google Apps) - so nothing onsite.

Thanks both for your replies. Yes, definitely shared the device I'm trying to cast to with a classroom and an individual, and I know what you mean about the allow bit. I have the latest OS, have double checked that.

 

I have managed to get it working by chance! I connected both the receiver (windows laptop) and chromebook to my mobile hotspot and once I'd done that, the receiver was listed in the app, even after connecting to our network with a proxy. I'll have to find a better way of doing that ...

I'm interested to know if anyone is still working on this or getting issues. I too found the proxy issue and with a few workarounds verified that it will work (subject to those factors mentioned already) when the proxy not in the equation. However, getting a demo all set up today and it suddenly behaves different to on Monday - now I either can see the cast receiver but can't cast or I get 'Unexpected Error' and 'Restart the Cast Receiver' which just loops around (depending on the user). Can anyone comment/shed any light please?

Does anyone have any later advice on this?

 

I'm trying to cast between two laptops sitting on my desk, but get the "No Cast destinations found" message.

 

One machine is Windows 7 and the other is Windows 8.1. Both are running the latest version of Chrome (v61 64 bit), both have the latest version of the Googlecast for education extension installed. I've tried over the school wired and wireless network and tethered to my phone. The Windows Firewall is turned off. I can ping from one device to the other and have internet connection on both machines.

 

Ideas welcome...

1. On a device connected to the same network as the Cast receiver device, install one of the network service inspection utilities listed below.
   
2. Run the utility and find the _googlecast._tcp.local service record.This record will describe your Cast receiver device name and model along with service data.
    
   
3. Copy the record information for communication to Google Cast Support.
   

Install the network service inspection utilities as follows:

 

• Apple OSX - Install Bonjour Browser from Tildesoft
  
• Android - Install ZeroConf Browser from Play Store
  
• Linux - Install avahi-discovery and run it as follows:
  
  • sudo apt-get install avahi-discover
    
  • sudo start avahi-daemon
    
  • avahi-discover

Thank you. I guess there's something preventing the broadcast, as I don't see anything using ZeroConf. Is there an equivalent network inspection utility for Windows that anyone would recommend?

probably wireshark, but you would need to configure it to look for _googlecast._tcp.local It would probably be worth checking if your wifi allows this through.
