Job Request - please upload class lists

If this sounds like a moan, it is. Please can I have your thoughts on the following

 

I am currently being asked by a department to create and upload class lists into a piece of online software which they use in class. My argument is, it is my job to ensure that software is accessible and running at all time, it is the teaching staff who are wanting to use the software responsibility to know how to use it and have been using it in the past. I feel like I am being asked to do their job.

I often get asked to do this. If it is a matter of bulk updating a system it is easier and faster for me to do it as the teacher usually do not have the ability. If it is a matter of individually entering details of students to a system that is their problem not mine as it does not take any specialist knowledge.

Completely agree, the data person does jobs like this at our place.

I guess this is all down to individual situations. If there is a dedicated data 'manager', then yep, I would see it as their responsibility.

 

I'm in primary schools and I'd rather do this myself, then I know its done right first time! There's been a couple of times that teaching staff have been left to do this, only to ***k it up then ask me to dig them out of a hole.

How big a job are we talking? If its only a 15 minute job, I'd just do it and tell the teacher they owe you a pint - keep it light-hearted.

 

If its a major task then I would talk to your line manager to make them aware of what you are being asked to do, and get their opinion on it.

Once you have opened the flood gates you might end up with all sorts wanting doing.

I must admit, the first couple of weeks I tend to spend doing this. I'm happy to do it, but we seem to have that many departmental software subscriptions each year it seems to be taking longer and longer to do.

 

Kerboodle, VocabExpress, ActiveLearn, ActiveTeach, MyMaths, Accelerated Reader, Library System etc. Most are manual jobs exported the info it requires in whatever wild and wacky format from SIMS and uploading from a .csv. There's only RealSmart, ClassCharts and Doddle, that have some sort of working MIS link which does it all automatically.

Personally I wouldn't do it especially if others have been doing it in the past. As others have said, it might be easy for you to do it not but you will set a precedent that means you may be asked to do more and more duties which are not your job. My opinion is that lazy staff will ask others to do anything they don't want to do. Staff who want to do a good job will ask you how to do it so they can then do it themselves. If I know how to do something I will show people but I wont do it for them.

Could the following vendors please explain why they have no mis exporter? Thing that gets me with these are the random students that turn up part way through the year! And take an hour per student to create accounts.

Is this Collins connect ? I sat with a teacher sorting this out, interesting way of creating accounts and very picky I've found...
