northeast_technician Posted September 21, 2016 Posted September 21, 2016 Just a query, some of my staff are wanting to use Disney characters and other movies like that on our school website. Is this allowed or do you need to seek permission from the film company first?
northeast_technician Posted September 21, 2016 Author Posted September 21, 2016 so simply a no then, i have told them not to do anything but did notice other schools do have music videos and characters on theirs, didnt want to risk doing anything until i found clarification though.
FN-GM Posted September 21, 2016 Posted September 21, 2016 Not sure to be honest. I don't think its allowed I am not 100% sure though. I was just correcting your typo in the tittle
northeast_technician Posted September 21, 2016 Author Posted September 21, 2016 ah sorry, dam auto text. didnt know if film companies where more relaxed about that sort of thing with education
elsiegee40 Posted September 21, 2016 Posted September 21, 2016 ah sorry, dam auto text. didnt know if film companies where more relaxed about that sort of thing with education Generally speaking, no they aren't. Copyright material only gets used with the copyright holder's permission.
northeast_technician Posted September 21, 2016 Author Posted September 21, 2016 i have sent an email off so we shall see what comes back
tmoon-mint Posted September 21, 2016 Posted September 21, 2016 Since the school website could be classed as marketing I wouldn't say it falls under fair use.
3s-gtech Posted September 21, 2016 Posted September 21, 2016 Disney especially hold onto their IP with a firm grip. Generally, if it's a copyright image without a licensing system (like Getty, Shutterstock etc) it'll be a no, but there's no harm in asking. If you say 'but these other sites do it!' expect them to stop doing so pretty quickly.
LeMarchand Posted September 21, 2016 Posted September 21, 2016 Has anyone noticed that some image searches reveal film publicity/press pack shots that are watermarked by (like Getty)? How does that work? Or are they just chancing it?
