Offsite Cloud Backup

I've been looking in to offsite cloud backup and I was wondering what people are currently using and their experience.

 

Plus has anyone had any experience with Backblaze? Their B2 Business pricing is very, very cheap!

Blackblaze only has a single data center in the US so it's probably not an option for a number of reasons.

I've created a offsite personal "cloud" aka just a server that lives in another building on the site, I use backupassist to rsync the data to it. If you have google you have unlimited space so you could technically use that

Could look at this - CloudBerry Lab Press Center - It backs up to many other cloud provders such as Amazon, Google drive etc, so if you get free cloud space (education) it might work out very very cheap.

Second that, using it here and works well once you've got it settled down. Took a bit to get right at first.

 

To those who use Google Drive, have you read the Terms and Conditions? Does it state backups are allowed? I'm sure most will state you can only store live documents, not backup files. If your using it as a second sync location rather than historical backups I'm sure your fine. There's a reason why they charge for backups and not cloud storage on Google Drive or OneDrive and its down to terms and conditions!

I beleive they still offer you a trail account with £125 credit for Azure (30 days limit). We did this and meant we had a free month to get it setup. You can choosen between running a Azure Backup Agent or Azure Backup Server. We went for server which is a cut down version of DPM. It meant we can backup multiple servers from one console and backup locally to existing NAS boxes for a 30 day cache. Makes restoring easier and you can backup apps etc for up to 30 days without evening using Azure credit.

It depends where the data is as you also get charged per instance (IE backup source or type). So for us we backup a file server, MIS server and the DPM instance itself so we have 3 instances. It also depends how you want your data protected as you can pick from multiple datacenters, locations etc. Azure have a pricing calculator which can give you an idea but really the months trail will give you a better idea.

Also depends on your rention periods etc. We backup around 600 GB and hold it for up to two years. Plus the SIMS backup and were paying out around £70 a month. We're only about 6 months in so costs will grow a little as we reach 2 years but compression means it shouldn't increase much. You pay as you go so if you can clean up your file storage (We've just done this) you can save money, rather than paying for 1 TB backup for 3 years and only using 500 GB of it.

We use Spanning backup. Quite expensive, but we only do it for staff, not students.
