+1 This is what we do, we then tell the LA what IPs from their given range need to be special and job done.

 

They will only complicate matters if my experience is anything to go by from a previous employment. It took us 3 months to get them to setup for an internal webmail server, 6 months to diagnose a problem with so called ****mail and another 6 months to get internal blackberry server access from outside.

What I described is our setup with SchoolsBroadband. They allocate us a rather large block of private IPs and I carve them up as we see fit. SB's router sends all traffic for (example) 10.0.32.0/20 to our core switch as the next hop, and our core switch default routes back up to them.

 

We let SB handle the firewall side of things and everything (including NAT) works as expected, a 5 minute support call does the job and all our external services work fine. I suppose the real question in this case is, how good is your LA's support desk?

 

I'd hate to introduce yet another NAT layer in your case, double NAT causes far more trouble than problems it solves in my experience.

So an update,

 

I have removed all traces of Vlans from the switches checked switch interlinks for loops etc can't see anything. Checked DNS and that appears to be working fine as tests from dcdiag /test:dns all pass.

 

Still having a nightmare though and it all seems centered around file browsing and internet browsing and printing, databases are working fine such as Sims and Catering, but I am now at a loss.

Update and problem found.....

 

OK the problem was down to a faulty VM. It was our Bitdefender AV control Linux VM that was causing a large amount of synchronous sequential reads and writes for long periods on the storage array. This was slowing down the whole array and thus the servers stored on it.

 

Turned off the VM and everything back to normal, now to contact Bitdefender to find out why :)

What product do you use as the hyper-visor? Might be worth setting some limits to avoid it happening.

Yeah, Hyper-v we were using.
