So with yet another £ 3 increase to my virgin media broadband bill and the extremely poor speeds I'm getting of late I have decided to consider my options.

 

Any ideas?

We've been perfectly happy with BT Infinity. Consistent download speeds (80 down, 20 up) and the only downtime we've had is due to the crappy HomeHub router I haven't got around to replacing yet.

 

We had so many issues with VM throttling us (and the price hikes...) we eventually got fed up too.

And bt sport too.. I'll give them a ring today and see what's available on my area. I'm literally getting about 4meg

Are you not on the fibre service with Virgin then? I get consistent 70Mb even on their lowest tier. How far are you from the exchange - I'm not that far away, but BT estimated 6Mb to me - and I guess that was probably generous - so sucking up the price rise ready for a new moan at Virgin to get a price reduction in the near future

It's a nightmare.. It used to be brill but it's garbage now. I tried the pone call to them and they don't want to budge on pricing

I'm using plusnet fibre and have to say I'm pretty pleased with it. 78Mb down - 19 up - I'm quite close to the cabinet. They let you have a fixed IP for a one off fiver fee too which is handy.

 

The only gripe I have is that I think their DNS servers are a bit slow - but you can find alternatives.

My virgin once dropped to about 10% of normal and after half an hour of getting nowhere they just sent out a new router. Fixed it straight away.

I've been with them for years, NTL before that and Cable and Wireless prior to that. This is the second time I have left them because of support issues.

 

We have only had the extra capacity at the exchange for to get BT Infinity for the last few months.

I'm currently with Virgin due to ADSL here in town been at 4Mb, used to pull 16 down out in the village.

 

When the cabinet gets activated at the end of the street I am going to sign up for FTTC with PlusNet with a view to ditching Virgin, I'm on a mates rates package with TV, Phone and BB, I don't use the phone but costs me more to get rid, I cannot change my package as I will end up paying more due to been on mates rates. The only thing that is keeping me is the broadband. I'm in the process of working out what channels I watch and seeing what the Sky equivalent is.

 

My connection has been up and down recently but think its down to the router, not had time to swap out to modem only mode, quicker to restart it at this present time.

 

See what FTTC can do for me I think.

I use Plusnet. Very fast support (better before BT ruined it 16 months ago).

I use EE (also owned by BT now). It's been pretty poor - I won't be renewing. The max speed I get is the same as I was previously getting on BT (38Mb/s on the cheapest fttc package), but only at off-peak times. Peak times seem to be almost all of the time I want to use it and then it is regularly as low as 1 or 2Mb/s. Can't wait for my contract to end.

 

It's cheap, but presumably because the contention readers are awful.

I am with sky on fttc and I have to say they have been brilliant. The only issues I have had are all down the bt open reach being useless but sky support are brilliant. Never had a slow down over expected rates and if you have sky TV it's not that expensive.

We're on Sky too. Again all our problems have been with BT/openreach

Virgin have issues with expanding their network. It starts fine but suddenly your speed drops as they overload the cabinet then have to do engineering work to fix it. Telephone support is useless, but the social media team on Twitter appear to have more power. They cut my monthly cost and revoked the charge for leaving early if I didn't want to wait out the engineering work.

 

It's been stable since they fixed the cabinet and the connection gave 50MB but they seem to sorely misjudge how many people want their service when they open up more slots. I was crawling along on 1-2MB for months.

£53 per/Month (with phone) for a 76Mb/s connection of which gaurantee to get 38Mb/s, currently getting about 43Mb/s Down and 16Mb/s up. It is a lot more stable I get the same speed 5am as I do 9pm.

 

Upload improvement is a big plus for me so I can upload to the cloud 3 times the speed of Virgin.

Well I got a similar employee benefit for my sky tv. That's considerably cheap for the package currently.

 

I might try sky then. See that they have to offer in addition to my tv

 

I'm getting about 4Mbps down and 1.2 up now! Been like this for about a week on this occasion. Periodic sudden drops. Two days last week without it. Wouldn't mind if they offered some compensation! Instead they increase my pricing!

We moved to BT after Virgin hiked their price for us three times in a 6 month period (BT being the best option as we wanted a bundle with BT sport for MotoGP).

 

Not had many issues with BT at all. When we cancelled Virgin, they tried to tell my other half that BT's fibre wouldn't be good enough for gaming.
