Converting to DivX

Can anyone recommend free software for converting a DVD I have created to DivX? I have DivX convertor but it is sooo slow.

ffmpeg might work but I've never used it to convert from dvd so I can't offer any more advice really.

Whatever flavor of mpeg4 codec you use to encode it will take a while as transcoding formats is a really CPU intensive job. You may be able to speed it up by decreasing the quality of the output file but I don't think you will see much improvement in speed by switching from DivX to XviD.

ffmpeg definitely works. Its command line is complex (!) so I use Super (http://www.erightsoft.com/) which is basically a (free!) GUI front end for the conversion.

 

Depending on what you're going to play the file with, you might get away with dropping the video/audio bitrates - this can really help (forgotten the numbers but I've gone from an hour to convert an hour's video down to about 15 minutes on the same CPU. I'm watching stuff on a small MSI pocket TV so the lower quality is not an issue)
