Upgraded DC's - start menu/desktop redirection fault

Over the holidays I have upgraded 2 of our or 3 DC's to 2012r2 (created new and migrated roles - old DC's have not been demoted yet, just switched off whilst everything is tested without them). All went well, and I tested and tested. I tested the start menu/desktop redirection and this was working fine - however, the teachers are now back and a few machines are not loading the redirected environments.

 

Prior to the upgrade, the redirect folder was its own share on one server, and since the upgrade I have now placed this within netlogon. I have checked permissions and all seems ok - any ideas?

Can I ask why you have moved it to the netlogon folder? I wouldn't have thought this is best practice. I have always had them on a share.

Had a share on a server at my last place for Redirected Start Menu TBH. The only thing I put in netlogon are logon scripts and policy files such as BGInfo.

 

How I'd normally do this is redirect a single users desktop and then make it read only and point other users to it. So maybe if you recreate the folder for redirection and then update users to point to this folder.

 

The last thing I'd do is start changing permissions on NETLOGON folder TBH unless there was a problem.

 

Maybe look at DFS instead??

I used netlogon as a place to split the load over multiple DC's with the start menu/desktop share - with everything else split, it was the only point of failure if I were to restart a DC. I have just created its own share and will see what happens. Thanks for your replies

You shouldn't really use Netlogon for that. Consider setting up DFSR.

I have referred this this edugeek blog before which uses Netlogon - is this a matter of opinion?
