How do I connect to a home PC from inside the wan?

I want to connect to home PCs for remote support from inside the Local Authority WAN.

 

We want full control so wouldn't want to use a hosted service like logmein.

 

How can I do this? SSH Tunnel RDP or VNC?

 

Unsecured connection with VNC/ RDP isn't an option as the Local Authority wouldn't allow it.

 

(these users have a TS connection into the WAN, and I can remote onto _that_ session - I just need to see their local desktops too)

You could use remote desktop web connection

If you got staff online with messenger at home and you signed on you can get control using RDP (which should be 128bit encrypted) by sending them a request on messenger.

They'll need at least XP Pro at home for the RDP option.

How about Ultra VNC Single Click? it can be encrypted, and is configurable by you.

VNC or RD should both be capable of this and they both have options to use various kinds of encryption. If you want full control (to host it yourself) then your going to need some kind of open port to the world. UltraVNC has lots of useful add-ons: http://www.uvnc.com/addons/index.html

Messenger does work inside the WAN - I lied! What's the difference between that and just getting them to request remote assistance - apart from the ease of a contact ready set up??

 

(We don't run msn be default - but PSI via our own jabber server (open-fire))

The main difference is the quality of the screen image and the speed. When I have used it it has had very poor quality screen reproduction that is no where near as quick as RDP. It does give you functions like chat and an easy take/give control thing for the client pc.

we do this all the time i have an account set for friends (who i help do stuff like upload photos to facebook and stuff) and a school account where we can install hotfixes and sims updates from home.

 

SLT who provide support form our kit kicked up that we had it on the curric servers so we just installed it on we NAS Server and then RDP to the server we want...easy

Yes logmein is great. We could open it up just for us but really we want total control. The LA have LMI thoroughly blocked as well, though they allow traffic in.
