Exchange 2010 to 2013

Hi,

 

I'm just in the process of migrating my exchange server from 2010 to 2013. Once I have migrated all the mailboxes and everything else I need, I am going to decommision the old excahnge server. My question is when I have done that and no longer have the server in my domain is it possible to rename the new exchange server to the name of the old exchange server?

Thats what I thought. I do have a couple of other little niggles, when I connect to the admin panel though the local host it has a certification error, whats the easiest way to fix this? Also when connecting internally through Outlook it is sometimes asking for user credentials, how can I stop that?

Your certificate provider will be able to issue a new certificate. Alternatively use your external DNS name to go to the ECP.

 

You should keep your old Exchange server live for a while. When a user opens outlook for the first time since the upgrade, it will be used to change the Outlook configuration to point to the new server. If not you will get errors and possibly password popup boxes.

I have migrated through from Exchange 2000 to 2013 over the years. Always set up anew server, with new IP and new name, created new ssl certificates and new server accessed using new domain name so all separate.

 

If you point all users to the exchange 2013 box it will proxy through to any mailboxes still on 2010. as above, once mailboxes migrated keep both boxes live, outlook will re-point to the new server.

 

Once all moved, make sure you transfer any remaining roles to the new server. Then just shut down the old box for a while to check all is OK before decommissioning.

The only reason I wanted to rename the server was due to some scripts we run reference the server name and it would have been easier for me to keep it the same. No big deal though, I'll just have edit the scripts.

And decomission it fully by uinstalling The old version of exchange before removing it from the domain and wiping the hdd..
