Hi

I have an Dell E5520 with a dead network card. wifi working okay. I need to join this to the school domain, but cannot unless using a cable connected directly in.

This laptop has a RJ11, can I use an adaptor to RJ45 to get onto the network? If so does it need to be something specific?

As I say probably a stupid question!

Thank you

Do you not have a spare network card from a broken laptop? I've changed several on the Dell E5420 (which is basiclly the same as the E5520) and it was easy!

If not maybe a ethernet to USB adapter?

Hi, Did think about that but had to change the hinges on one of these in the past and literally had to take the thing completely apart.

Ethernet to USB adaptor sounds a good idea, would it just work, is there a particular one you would recommend? I think that it is the port on the back of the laptop that is broken, some of the pins look bent!

Thank you

if its just for this type of job basically any usb lan adapter will do if you think you might end up with laptops/tablets down the line without network ports and might need to pxe boot them get one that supports pxe booting
