Exchange 2007 to 2013 Migration

Just completed the final mailbox move from Exchange 2007 to 2013. Followed various online guides and everything has gone like clockwork.

My question is :- When the user opens outlook client for the first time after their mailbox is moved they get a box saying to restart outlook, they restart outlook and everything works. (tested and checked)

From reading online it appears that the old exchange server tells the client about the new one and updates the setting in the client (this seems logical)

As some of my users (teachers who hibernate) won't open outlook until September does this mean i need to keep the old exchange server running until then to pick up the change?

I don't really want to be running around on first day back sorting outlook out. I could change DNS or probably find a script to make the change but really need to know that it would work before doing so?

Anyone had a similar problem?

Can't you wake all of the machines up and then log them off?

Have you got an internal autodiscover entry in DNS?

yes autodiscover setup and working for a brand new user (it pulls correct server name and sets up account etc).

That's good - I think the only other thing you need setup correctly is your Outlook Anywhere settings.

All set correctly. Everything works, tried multiple tests with various devices via various network connections.

It's just pulling the new settings if the server that issues them no longer exists?

In that case it should be absolutely fine.

 

Power down your Ex2007 box and see what happens?

For that i need an existing account to test with, that hasn't already connected! Might have to wait until someone comes in! but being the summer holidays could be a long wait.

fortunately a member of staff wandered in to do some work so did a few tests.

With the old exchange server turned off Outlook says it can't find the server and asks if you want to work offline.

So changed the dns to point the old server name at the new server and that works.

So exchange 2007 has now bitten the dust. Fingers crossed it works okay on exam day.
