Laptops with a 10.4" screen

Morning Guys,

 

I have a bit of a problem. I need a laptop for work and it needs to be really portable. I have looked at the EEE and the Vye options but to me, a 7" screen is just too small and a 12.1" is too big. I am looking for something around the 10.4" range but am having real trouble finding one in my budget. The only ones I can seem to find are the Toughbooks, and I ain't paying 3k for a laptop.

 

My budget is around £600-£800. I really liked the older Acer Travelmate C110. It is the perfect size but also has tablet functionality, which is good. Unfortuantly, they do not sell these anymore and I am having real trouble finding the modern day equivelent.

 

Any suggestions would be most welcome.

Sony TZ12VN is 11.1" which is better than the 12 but not as good as your 10.4.

 

Cheaper than 3k but more than your £600-800.

 

I think you'll struggle personally.

I have some Thinkpad X60 laptops (a 12" screen admittedly) but you would be hard-pushed to say that they aren't portable enough!

 

ICT Direct did me a good deal on 12 of them - condierably less than the £1200 RRP (read as within your price range) and they were boxed new.

I'm afraid that you aren't going to find such a machine for that price. Ultra mobile PC's come with a premium. The only 10" one I could find was a Panasonic toughbook, but that was £2.5k.

I would echo Rics comments about Thinkpad X series, I used to carry one of these when I worked in industry. If I was travelling light I would leave the base at home. Tough as nails, light and good battery life too.

they're all those things but the lack of a trackpad could be a pita for some.

Not me persnoally, the trackpoint and button on thinkpads are just fine for me - but nothing beats a trackpad for speed and accuracy. Except a mouse that is, but i haven't used a mouse with a laptop for years.

 

plus, i would hope the batteries shipped with the current X series are better than the 4-cell battery in some of the T61's which is just horrendous.

Could you hang on for the new EEEs, with the larger screen that fills right up to the edge?

 

They will be better spec'd and I believe they are to offer a version with XP, if you are that way inclined.
