Dos_Box Posted April 23, 2006 Posted April 23, 2006 Retrospect 7.5 also has the wonderful 'Proactive' backup system where it detects idle time on your servers and backs up what it can when it can, so you don't have to schedule anything. With an autoloader it means that I can have 3 difernt backup sets (exchange, daily and weekly) all running at once. It works smashing. I've found Retrospect 7.5 to be the easiest and most friendly backup software I've ever used.

Volume Shadow Copies are used to recover accidental file changes, it won't allow for drive failure. We use a very similar regime, Volume Shadow for immediate/user recovery of deleted/overwritten files. Robocopy to backup server in server room, robocopy to big drives in a couple of secure workstations and robocopy to removeable USB drives swapped in/out of safe.

Gatt Posted May 31, 2006 Posted May 31, 2006 Using NTBackup, and dont think the beancounters are going to release me any money to get something like Veratis Trying to get away from tapes - plan to backup the kids home drives at EoY to DVD (Poss DL) so I can free some space on the File Server, but at 100GB its gonna be a nightmare Backups have been half hearted here from the look of things, so need to come up with a schedule for backing up come september - any assistance on this would be greatly appreciated
DMcCoy Posted May 31, 2006 Posted May 31, 2006 The only issue with dvd and cd writeables is there somewhat limited lifespan. They tend to degrade over time, sometimes a few months is all that is needed for a disc to become a coaster. I believe the chemicals react with each other causing disc 'rot'. MO drives are better for long term archival as they have a much better media lifespan, but they aren't cheap. Tape is ok if stored somewhere sensible and you have a drive that can still read them!

I'm looking at doing this for DR (in addition to tape) and was wondering whether to make the server a DC or not. We currently do full nightlys to two tape drives (admin + curriculum) and I take the friday tapes home. Advantages: Once power is restored, I've got a box in the other building that has all the files and can process logons. Once I enable DHCP and rejig home folder paths I can pull a (small, but usable) network together while I wait fo replacement hardware to arrive. Disadvantages: ??
bossman Posted January 31, 2007 Posted January 31, 2007 Buffalo 2TB nasbox ad authentication + Cobian free backup software at the mo. Looking at livestate from symantec and also bare metal server backup from Acronis. Both allow you to backup and restore to any other server reproducing a new hal for that server hardware. These products will both do live incremental updates as scheduled through the day with very little increase to the network traffic. This is a must for us as we are 24/7 and need to have access at all times.
