[SCCM 2012] Speeds

Does anyone know how to speed up the deployment of an image? I've done it once before in WDS where a client could pull the image down at 500+ mbps but in my role i've setup SCCM and can't seem to break past the 50mbps point.

I've seen this page for speeding the initial pull down of boot file : System Center Configuration Manager: How to boost PXE TFTP Boot speed.

 

I remember changing some packet sizes but can't remember which ones i changed, if anyone could point me in the right direction that would be grand. I've reimage 300+ machines during the summer and want it to go as fast as possible.

Anyway, have you looked at multicasting? I've not done this myself, so not sure how difficult it would be to set up initially. But may help.

Upgrade to SCCM 1511 and beyond and you'll notice a speed difference if you're only on SCCM 2012.

Currently on 1602 so it's not that. Maybe im just being inpatient, it's pulling down the image at anywhere between 50mbps and 150mbps. I've also changed the deployment method from downloading to the local disk first then deploying to installing it straight away.

 

I've tried multicast once before in WDS and wasn't that keen on it. The fact that it waits for the slowest client is a pain. I can't remember where i had seen the option for 10,100,1000 mbps in sccm for deployment speeds, but if im getting 150mbps at times i'd assume ive went for the 1gbps option.

The speed options you're thinking about are on the Multicast tab of the Distribution Point Properties.

Windows 10 edu on an oold dual core desktop with a laptop hdd in it took 16 minutes. Image size was 35GB.

Our wim file is smaller and on a gen4 i3 it takes a couple of hours which is half the time it used to before we went to 1511/1602!

Exactly so I was beginning to wonder why you thought 16 mins is too slow!

I just upgraded to 1602. Class of 30 machines used to take takes over hour and half to do. Same image with wds only took under 25mins. There is however a article online by Garry hampsden i think his name is on how to speed up deployment by a registry hack which improved our speed to roughly 40mins in a class of 30

Urm unfortunately not at the moment, I'm on holidays and purposefully turned my machine off at work so i cant do work! Back on friday but will have a quick google on my phone to see if i can find it again

BUT remember this may not work in your environment, it didnt work in my test one as the switch gear was crappy, worked great in production.

8192, but 4096 is suitable for 100mb nic environments

That other reg change is for the initial downloading of the boot file only. Mind after looking at it and changing some more values it was downloading the image to the local drive at 950mbps before it started deploying so not sure why i was complaining now.

Sorry! I just reread your post and realised it was post boot download that you wanted to speed up. This has always been fast for us but i would be interested in what other values you have changed to make it download at 950mbps.

 

Have you had any issues of packet loss yet?

Ive had no packet loss that i know of.
