3 TB hard drive at home - data inaccessible

I have everything on it and my personal data is inaccessible. It shows that 280GB free of 2.72 TB. There are few folders which are accessible but when I try to copy them, drive simply disconnect.

how is the HDD enclosed? USB caddy, internal SATA power...

 

could it be Under power? Have you tested the PSU.

 

I'm afraid that doesn't sound good. Do you get a ticking or any other unnatural noises coming from the HDD when you plug it in

Yes this ticking sound is from the beginning about 2 years ago.....

I have also tested with USB caddy...same problem....

You can pay a company to try and recover the data or repair the drive, but it will cost you.

 

You should always get the data off as soon as you hear any dodgy sounds.

Well I did backup a year ago but it is fraction of the data.....I am heart broken with this loss........

It's not lost yet.

Remove the circuit board. Usually screwed on with a few torx screws.

There will be two sets of copper coated contacts that become tarnished over time resulting in poor contact. To clean them, rub gently with a pencil eraser.

No guarantees this is the cause or will help but i've saved data off a few hard drives this way.

Booting from a Linux Live CD has also helped.

What make hard drive is it ?

I've always been weary of large drives - I only back up to 1TB drives. I used to have 3 x 3TB drives, but all 3 ended up with bad sector within the first year, AS for the 1TB drives they're all still error free 5 years on!

 

Lessons are learnt - always back up twice!

First try attaching it to another computer using an enclosure or alternative PSU / SATA connector.

 

It's probably worth a run through with Spinrite - this tool is a gem but only run on level 2.

 

There's a 'ticking' sound and a 'clicking' sound, the latter being more prominent. If that is the case the drive is failing.

If it's making the clicking sounds then it may be worth doing the freezer method to cool the drive enough to access the data properly and just copy everything off.

have you tried move the folder - file with command line try that way bit longer to do

 

i am do the same at the minute as i work long hours now
