DPM VM restore issue??

Hi guys

 

Not sure if this is a DPM issue per se, i assume it must be as this is a test restore im having an issue with, the actual server itself is up and running.

So ive restored the VM, started it up, it shows the windows logo with the swirly dots, does that for about 30 seconds then i get a black screen. At random times a window will appear, sometimes its just the border, sometimes its the full window but its empty, occasionally i actually get an error message, it stays onscreen just long enough for me to read "sign in process intialization error, see event log for details"

 

Googling just keeps pointing me to Windows 7, saying things like boot to safe mode, last known config, i cant do anything with this server, a restart hasnt helped. Ive tried two different restore dates now one from disk and one from tape, has anyone else had this problem restoring a VM using DPM

 

Server version is 2012 r2

I have restored vms without incident a few times using dpm 2012r2 although never a uefi one.

I'd check that secure boot is disabled (as i've had that stop a server from booting before). Are you just copying over the old one or have you tried importing it as a new virtual machine pointing at the restored vhdx?

i cant get into the BIOS unfortunately

 

as its just a test restore, ive recovered the entire VM to different host so as not to overwrite the original

Hi, I had a similar issue. My problem was the VM settings after restore didn't match the original configuration. Processors and RAM etc. I've had loads of headaches with DPM and VMs. Sometimes opening the configuration files with notepad++ can help find the error.

Original config and restored config seem to match, ill try taking a look at the config files see if I can spot anything, thanks
