Being fairly tuneful myself, standing next to someone at the Christmas service who sang every carol on the same single flat off-key note was quite difficult! People who struggle to sing in tune incorrectly call themselves tone deaf. Like all things in life, some people can do it naturally, some can do it with training, some are brilliant, some just about do it and a tiny minority have no chance whatsoever because they truly cannot hear any variation in tone (tone deaf) at all. Most people can hear tone variation to some degree though.
