Can't seem to find where to download the insider preview? It's not showing up in VLSC and the Windows 10 Media Creation Kit doesn't offer me the option either. Do I have to install Windows 10 and then 'upgrade' to insider preview through Settings, or can I download an iso from some hidden bit of insider.windows.com?

I'm so glad I'm retired and don't have to deal with rolling out Windows iOS....sorry.....Windows 10.

 

It seems to work a treat on my desktop and laptop at home, especially with a clean install, wasn't so good with an upgrade.

No mention of group policy templates for Edge then? The current ones are a joke. And will this edition improve the management of the start menu at all?

The only start menu management issues I've had with W10 is not being able to remove Settings.. Which annoyingly expands itself in the anniversary edition. Despite having Cortana disabled via GPO settings, Cortana is mysteriously ever-present in the Start Menu. Also so is Edge, which we really don't want to use here.

I'm one of the one who falls into the other camp - I've never got the Start Tile redirection working reliably. So I ditched it for Classic Start Menu.

I just used the Folder Redirection portion of User Policies.. Has that not been working for other people?

 

Edit: Oh, for tiles, you just need to use an .xml file. There were a few hiccoughs with what shortcuts would or wouldn't display but it didn't take long to sort out.

i diddnt even try and let users pin what they want on their own start menu its all in all programs anyway

Sorry I should have been more specific - menu item redirection works but the start tile method (xml) never worked. It misses apps out randomly (especially 'core' apps like explorer or notepad!) and just made the whole tile thing look like an unfinished project.

 

I know some people have had success but having tried multiple methods on Edu/Pro/Ent on all builds I decided it was time to give up!

If you install one of the Technical Preview builds you will notice some new policies for Edge. :)

I haven't tried the preview yet, but are the policies for Edge more comprehensive? Currently you get about 10 which are useless for management!

Have been playing with the latest Insider Preview and not sure I like it. The start menu has now moved the user from the top to the bottom left hand side. Also the file explorer icon normally located on the left hand side

of the start menu has now been hidden by default, you have to enable it to be shown. I had the login page background sorted by using login changer 1.5 and all worked well but does not work in the latest build. Although

you can set the login background the same as the ctrl, alt, delete page but if you disable the requirement to ctrl, alt, delete then it reverts to a colour. Also I could not find a way to apply the settings for all users, as soon

as I logged out and went back in as a new user it applied the default windows images. Also noticed that after imaging and deploying using WDS, (you can use the Windows 1511 WDS capture and deployment settings and

ADK unattend file) that the first login was no different than the current Windows 1511 build, using local profiles.

These are the policies in build 14336.

 

 

There are no where near enough policies there for us :/

 

I've disabled Edge here through AppLocker and have set Chrome as the default with its many group policies.

Not exactly a comprehensive list of policy settings is it! A handful more than the 1511 build though. We've got edge disabled at the moment and use IE11 and Chrome, although I'm tempted to force chrome as the default now as IE11 just doesn't seem to work wioth any video players, drag and drop pages etc.

Good idea. We already have Chrome as the default. Edge would be fine for a secondary browser.

Windows 10 Anniversary Update nears RTM with bugfixes galore

 

With its 2 August release date growing closer, the Windows 10 Anniversary Update is nearing completion.

 

A steady stream of new builds for Windows Insiders on the fast track has been released over the past few weeks. The latest build, 14383, came out today and includes a wide range of fixes. As with many of its predecessors, this build has been made available simultaneously for Windows 10 on the desktop and Windows 10 Mobile; Microsoft is intending to ship the Anniversary Update simultaneously for PC, phone, and Xbox One when that release date arrives.

 

Windows Central is reporting that according to its sources, the build one newer than today's release, 14384, is the first candidate for what would formerly be known as Release To Manufacturing (RTM). With Windows now being delivered "as a service," the old RTM terminology isn't favored by Redmond any more—not least because many people will download the update rather than have it preinstalled by a PC manufacturer—but the concept that RTM represents endures. The "RTM" build will be the one released on August 2 to people in the stable channel, and then after several months of regular Patch Tuesday updates, it will be released as the Current Branch for Business.

will VLSC actually show the new ISO's automatically or do you need to contact MS / reseller to have them released ?

 

With v1511 the vlsc iso was updated. I assume that ms will always have latest version in vlsc.

How quickly was the VLSC updated after general release? Will we actually get access to it on the 2nd or do we have to wait?
