Staff Mailbox sizes

For those schools who have on-site email servers - what size mailboxes do you give staff?

 

I currently set staff to 2GB and I'm now getting complaints they are having to delete emails older than 3 years.

 

SLT are set to 6GB

 

Am I being to tight with mailbox sizes?

2GB, apart from SLT who are unrestricted.

Was 2GB, then staff complained to SLT, SLT told me to give them more, so went to 5GB, few years later staff complained to SLT no space and don't have time to delete emails, i said the server is physically full, they said buy a new server. Bought a new server, few years later again 10GB not enough, so i just moved all the mailboxes to Office 365 and when they get to 50GB it will be tuff.

I guess it's more a question of do you have space issues? When we had onsite it ranged from 1GB on new starters to 10GB~ on older/department leaders etc etc

 

Nowadays so much junk is in emails (powerpoints etc) it's ever growing it seems

Unlimited for staff. The Head was quite clear with us that he doesn't want staff to be forced to delete anything - he'd rather we just purchased more disk space.

2GB here, except for a couple of users who have 3GB. We also have staff wanting to keep emails (some from nearly 7 years ago!). We've started archiving some peoples older emails to local pst file.

Not yet and I want to make sure I stay that way :-) It bad enough with their home folders and shared documents with files over 4 years old and last access 3 years ago

Aye understand that, but I mean like assuming you have lets say 100 staff, and that 2GB is 3 years emails. Then even upping all to 4GB would only be 200GB and last 6 years (In basic logic at least )

 

Obviously does depend on free space etc, even if you do it as an "sign-in" kind of request rather than by default

Ahh the good old days of onsite email servers! I think ours was 5gb for every user.

 

50GB today with office 365 and basically a non issue!

Unlimited for staff here - although I still think "house keeping" should be performed by staff and students for that matter. While I agree that communications need to be kept between staff and students / parents etc.

 

The vast majority of emails can be deleted, as an example the amount of Groupon, wowcher or Living social type emails that don't get deleted is into the tens of thousands. Small number in grand scale of things I suppose but still not difficult to delete.

I don't think you're being tight at all, we have ours set to 1Gb with the exception of a few who have had mailbox size increases. Biggest we have though is still only about 2Gb. We tend to encourage staff to do housekeeping on their mailboxes rather than just giving them more space. Eventually though we'll be moving over to Office 365 and (as has been said) it won't be an issue :-)
