Cheap PC for AirServer (Perhaps Stick PC)

We've got 44 projectors that we're wanting to provide wireless projection for. I am thinking AirServer on a stick PC might be the way to go as we can cater for both Windows and iOS/OSX.

 

Has anyone had any luck using a stick PC for this task? I don't think the Intel Compute Sticks have WiDi/Miracast but apparently the Asus VivoStick has Miracasting built in.

 

Thoughts? Has anyone got any better ideas? I'm all ears!

I tried one and it didn't work, but it doesnt mean it won't work ever. But you can get android sticks that literally do airplay or miracast, and you click a button to swap between them. That was a cheap £27 stick. So more advance ones have remotes etc.

 

Might work out cheaper in the long run and means no need to have a machine running as such, AirServer means the stick needs to auto login etc.

I've been looking in to using a Intel compute Stick for streaming at home and from what I've found the wifi is a bit pants for anything that requires a high framerate so the main thing I wanted it for (Steam Game streaming) is completely out of the question. but IOS airplay should be ok.

 

If you are buying 44 it wouldn't be out of the question for a supplier to give you one to test.

Off topic, but get powerline adpaters and a steam link for steam game streaming much much better!

I guess the biggest requirement for our techno-phobic teachers is that it works reliably and predictably.

We went down the AppleTV + AirParrot route. Airparrot was roughly £7-8/license per Windows PC.

 

All our AppleTVs use a wired connection, which does help.

Do you specifically need Miracast? You can buy a real Apple TV for less than half the price of either of these stick PCs + AirServer licence (the one without internal storage, perfect for your requirements, should only set you back about £40-£50, maybe less in bulk). That solves your IOS/OSX needs, and you can then use an app such as AirMyPc to Aircast PCs to Apple TVs.

If you only need Miracast you could get some Microsoft Wireless Display Adapters (the v2 version since it's faster and more reliable).

I've now tried one if these [emoji3]

 

The good: it worked straight away.

The bad: it's a bit laggy and video (especially sound) is a bit choppy

 

Any hints on whether I can change anything in settings to help this (change streaming quality? Change wireless channel?)

 

If not, has anyone tried any other Miracast devices?
