Right, I`m after some ideas on the best use of the Pupils Document share.

Currently we have a simple Mapped Network share for the pupils to drop their work in for the staff to collect.

This gets abused by both Staff and pupils!

The pupils copy their work in to a number of folders with "Modify" permissions which they then copy the files from their user area to there.

As well as copying their work they also copy music and videos into there thus clogging up the drive!

Staff are also asked to move these files off the drive (to the staff drive) for marking. Which they never do!.

We now have GB and GB of data sitting on there.

My vision is for them to use Office 365`s offering and using Teacher dashboard, but this has never got off the ground!.

What does everyone else do to manage pupils sharing work with the teachers over the network?

Use FSRM to restrict what file types can be saved there to stop the music/video issue.

Then periodically clear the drive - staff will soon get the message that if they don't move it, it will get deleted. If they have Modify permission anyway you could just turn round and say one of the students must have deleted it all :p

Yeah got FSRM setup on all folders other than a folder that they might need to save music\audio files into. They then save all Music\video into here!.

You may find that the reason Office 365 never got of the ground is because they have this shared folder as an alternative.

Speak to SLT explain the problems with having a completely open shared folder like this and that Office 365 offers a much better way to do it. Tell them you want to remove the folder and then teachers will have to use Office 365.

If they don't go for it try and win some smaller battles - at least put a complete block on your audio/video files and tell them they have to use Office 365 for them as they take up too much space.

We use Google Apps here and if students want to share anything with staff they have to do it through this.

Wehave a mapped drive whereby staff have full access but pupls only have; List folder, Read Attrib, Read Ext Attib, create files permission. Nothing else. This means they can only COPY/PASTE files to that drive, but once they have done so, they cannot read or delete that file.

So they can't pilfer others work, or use it for music etc. The contents are also deleted each night to keep it nice and clean. they can't lose any work (in theory) as they have to save it to their Documents first then copy it.

Thanks for your views, I think a block on audio\video is the way forward short term and then sharing from Office 365 long term from September maybe

Quotas to manage how much storage students can take.

FRSM to manage what they can save there.

Everywhere I have worked I have given READ access to certain members of staff to the students home folders and that has been good enough.

It also encourages students to have a tidy home folder and not jus everything stuck in the root.
