Who Uses YouTube EDU (i.e. YouTube For Schools)?

Do you use YouTube EDU? If so, how easy is it for the Teachers to add videos they want the Students to access?

 

What we don't want to do is make a rod for our own back by setting up YouTube Edu and then end up spending hours a day adding more and more videos that the Teachers want our Students to have access to.

We used it for about a term and then packed it and went with commentless, filtered, normal youtube. Everyone was happier.

We use it, but with the rod firmly in place for our backs. All videos authorised by me - it was a policy decision to do this due to an incident a while back.

 

That said, its a simple checkbox to issue whitelisting capabilities to other users via Google Apps, so it can be done that teachers have access.

Sorry to resurrect an old thread.

I am currently looking into this as YouTube for Schools is slowly being phased out and this to replace it. I am going to ask the very special question, how did you end up getting it working, was it the CNAME DNS method for the HTTP Redirect?

 

I am just a little unsure where to put the CNAME into windows DNS, as surely it would mean making a .com zone etc, which may cause internet sites to stop working :-(

We went with the DNS route. You only need to create a zone for the specific domain. These are the zones we have:

Well DNS obviously hates me I put in a cname for each bit listed to restrictmoderate.youtube.com and it goes nope and causes youtube to just not work.

Ah, so it seems I have to make the hosts for the restrict and moderaterestrict too.

 

That does make sense, even though it should forward DNS when it can't find it.

Ok, I have had to resort to posting on the Google Forums, as the traffic is going through the moderaterestrict and I am logged in but the approve functionality does not seem to appear.

Is the account you're logged in with set with approval permissions in the Google Apps admin pages?

OK, so a couple of things for anyone who finds this thread in the future.

 

The reason the Authorise button did appear, is because i didn't tick the Restrict Videos settings in the GaFE admin console.

 

I also had some issues with people not being able to log into YouTube due to Accounts.youtube.com not working, to which I found the following documentation that explained to make zones or each sub domain rather than the domains youtube.com etc

This is actually starting to "do-my-head-in"

 

I assume that if I just want to restrict non signed in users, I don't need to mess about in GaFE and I just need to add the DNS records.

I've tried CNAMES, DNAMES and A records. As I now understand it from the doc that BKGarry gave the link to, CNAMES and DNAMES won't work via Server 2012 so A records pointing to 216.239.38.120 are the way to go.

 

I've added the following zones:

http://www.youtube.com

youtubei.googleapis.com

m.youtube.com

youtube.googleapis.com

http://www.youtube-nocookie.com

 

I've given them all an A record pointing to 216.239.38.120

 

NSlookup for http://www.youtube.com shows 216.239.38.120

 

However, when I goto youtube via a browser, nothing is filtered.

GaFE shows no DNS restrictions.

 

DNS is certainly not my forte, so any help is gratefully received.
