Windows 10 Start Menu

Hi All,

 

I am working on a Windows 10 Build,

 

I have managed to get rid of everything like Contact support and so on.

 

Now when staff click start they only have search. I am just wondering is there a way to enable staff to pin there own items there? or like in windows 7 programs you use automatically get pinned there? Maybe i can set a policy to place items there?

Yes, you can. You can set tiles to be pinned by way of an XML sheet. Here are instructions if you use SCCM, and if you're not running SCCM, follow the guide up until you've run the Export-StartLayout cmdlet and then apply it with Group Policy by way of User Configuration, Administrative Templates, Start Menu and Taskbar, Start Menu Layout

 

It's only my to-do-list but I haven't actually tested this yet, so this is all in theory.

 

As for letting them pin stuff themselves, I'd assume that would be part of their roaming profile, if you choose to go down that route.

It might save you a lot of heartache and give you more flexibility.

While your looking at the start menu you may want to look at what default apps are installed/removed, I found these Powershell commands very helpful: Apps - Uninstall in Windows 10 - Windows 10 Forums

I've got a working XML file to use for the Windows 10 start menu. My only issue now is when a new user signs in, they get the correct Start Menu but they also seem to get a Windows PowerShell folder, a Windows Ease of Access folder and a systems tool folder. Does anyone know how to stop these appearing.

Does this include the contents of All Apps? I thought the XML file was just for the tile layout?

I think this is the case but I still don't want these folders to appear for the users. Can't find anyway of removing them for new users that sign in. Seem to be there by default.

Redirect the start menu via GPP. User Configuration, Policies, Windows Settings, Folder Redirection, Start Menu. That gets rid of all the default folders for me (Enterprise LTSB)

 

The only thing it leaves is Settings, which is annoying, but the app does nothing if you deny Control Panel access via User Configuration, Policies, Administrative Templates, Control Panel, Control access to the Control Panel and PC settings (Enabled)

That's exactly what I've done...

Hmm.. Peculiar. If I login as a local admin (or a staff user, who doesn't have a redirected menu yet as I'm not configuring staff profiles), those 4 folders and their contents all show up. My student profile doesn't get them.

 

If it helps, exclusive rights, move the contents and apply to earlier versions are all Disabled. Policy removal is set to leave contents.
