Sharepoint mirror to schools file server

Hi All,

 

I have discovered SharePoint (free) through the office 365 portal.

 

I am just tinkering and having a look around at the moment. I don't know if it is possible but my idea is to use SharePoint online to mirror our file server to allow the functionality of SharePoint to be used. Such as collaborative editing of documents. I don't want to host our documents as the fee amount 1.5TB would not be enough.

 

Anyone used this feature?

I think the 1.5 TB is wrong, it looks like its 300BG per sharepoint instance

If you want to use SharePoint's collaborating abilities, you need to host your files there. What do you mean by 'mirror' actually.

 

The amount of free storage you get on SharePoint is 1 TB + .5 GB per subscribed user. Check this

Hey - you can have up to 1.5 PB of data through SharePoint site collections. You can get this by adding the Office 365 Education Plus licenses which adds 1.5 million licenses and you get more storage per licenses purchased (its free remember so cost is nothing).

 

Each site collection can have 1TB but you can create over 500,000 site collections so its just a matter of moving the right documents into the right area to maximise this. Create a new image navigation and users can go straight to the document library - example below.

You wont want to mirror your entire file share. Thats going to be very inefficient.

 

But uploading popular files is a good idea

It sounds great but in practice it just doesn't work very well. I think Work Folders is more manageable/more realistic and you keep all the data on site.

 

Microsoft need to create some form of SharePoint DFS to allow true mirroring when dealing with a large volume of users, but having everything in the web doesn't necessarily mean it's better.

Your correct, its a very poor user interface and not as good as the 2010 server version in my opinion.

 

We have it setup but nobody really uses it to be honest.
