VPP, OSX cache server and Lightspeed MDM

Hello!

 

I am deploying apps to our iPads via Lightspeed MDM. I have installed OSX Server on our Mac mini. I've been prepping and applying blueprints via Apple Configurator 2 on a SEPERATE macbook (as I can move it round to the charge and sync units) which is adding the ipads to Lightspeed MDM.

 

Now then... How do I get the cache server to download the apps we have purchased via VPP and then have the iPads install the apps, set via Lightspeed policies, by pulling them from the cache server. Is this possible?

Caching Server has to firstly have a static public I.P. this is so other schools in your LA that may share the same public I.P. don't start getting problems not being able to update apps or iOS updates.

 

Caching Server doesn't automatically download the apps, you have to grab an iPad first to manually download them so that caching server can then caches the content.

 

Caching server won't push out any MDM polices, the links below should help you...

I see. So if I have an ipad with all the apps set up on it, do I just plug it in and the cache server does the rest?

If you have 30 iPads and they all need an app, you would enrol the first iPad in Lightspeed, it then sends a command to the App Store for the App which then arrives via the App Store on the iPad. The other 29 iPads would recieve their app via the caching server although this in invisible to the end user.

 

You need to ensure you have the right ports open...

We have a proxy... does it matter if that's on or not? On the iPads that is...

Your LA need to be able set up a reverse proxy that can either see your DNS record or static I.P.

Make sure that the apps that your are pushing out have been purchased (even the free ones) if not you will need to be signed in to the iPads using an Apple ID. If you look at the Apps they should have MD next to them. I had to purchase all of our free ones at £0.00 to push them all out via managed distribution
