Network Recycle Bin

As this is a very common thing of staff or students "accidentally" deleting work, I was wondering if there is a way to setup a network recycle bin, rather that having to restore from a backup as this can take time?

Are you not using normal volume shadow copies on your file server? Or are you looking for some kind of up to the minute restoration of files?

Volume Shadow Copy has been enough for me. I don't let on it's there - but Mrs gee40 can magically get lots of things back deleted in the last couple of weeks. As we have the shadow taken twice a day, it's quite handy for showing when it's unlikely the document was ever saved in the first place too.

Volume Shadow Copy can eat a lot of space, so be warned. The alternative of course is OneDrive. Every user has their own Recycle Bin which only deletes files older than 30 days.

Michael - Have you got this setup? Do you have OneDrive area mapped as their home drive?

Unfortunately no, it's just too fiddly. The only viable option is a third party utility, which costs x amount and defeats the objective (considering O365 is free). I've tried coding Powershell, but it isn't consistent enough either.

Realistically the number of way back recoveries is usually very small. Most rescues are stuff gone in the last week. I can only think of twice in the last 10 years that I've had to go back to backup. We have just short of a fortnight on Volume Shadow Copy.
