Does anybody knows a free software that scan our network to draw a network map by itself.

solar winds do lan surveyor, its not free but there is a 30 day trial which could you give you a start point.

I would recommend The Dude, it's free. It's not perfect and I did have to manually tweek the map afterwards.

We tried the dude it was OK until it crashed all our access points and we had to go round manually resetting them

What make and model of access point?

Try and do it when there are no staff around using wireless. The Dude gets confused when it is scanning and finds the same laptop on a few different APs due to people moving around.

mostly 3com 8750's with some 3com 7760

Everytime i use one of these programs it gives me a flat map and doesn't show me which devices are plugged into which switches. Could this be because my switches are on a different subnet to everything else?

Ah, you want some software that actually works out the wiring links between the switches? Are these switches managed and have SNMP?

3com do a free tool called Network Supervisor.

There is a commercial version but hunt and you will find the free one.

It does the job for us here and it does work with all switches as well I believe.

Hello Geoff, was this for me?. If so I'm looking for something to identify whats plugged into each switch for me as i have a few random ports aroudn the school. The switches are all hp 2626.

Im the same, I run the Dude and get nothing like what MarkB got, I just get a flat map, with every single device: computers, switches and printers all connected to one cloud with the network id in it

Yes, that was aimed at you strawberry. I suggest you have a look at the 3com software Zerohour suggested. Failing that, you'll have to pay $$$ as I have not seen any free software that will generate a proper topology map.

We use 3com NS here too (the free one). As well as the layout it will let you launch the web management for each switch, set up QoS (IIRC) and also show you health alerts if you turn the monitoring on (e.g. slow fans, saturated links).

 

Very good for a freebie.
