It wasn't enabled, so I enabled it and removed and re added the open directory, but still no Active directory in the search path.

Just followed the instructions, whic hhave worked fine upto the point where you set the client up, It adds open directory fine but I don't get an Active directory entry in the search path page.

I had looked at Smoothwall at one point but at the moment we only seem to be able to access PPTP services on our VPN server (Its Windows Server 2003's RRAS) we can get clients to connect with L2TP/IPSec when they are on the local school network but not from outside, I have got SWGFL to open incoming ports 500,1701 UDP as well as Protocols 50 and 51, This results in an error occurring during the initial security negotiations. I assume this is becuase the server is trying to make outgoing connections which are blocked by the SWGLF firewall, but they don't see anything being denied why I attempt to connect, they claim its a problem on my end as they can't telnet to the ports, which is probably because they are running on UDP. If I were to set up a test smothwall box as a vpn server at the school what Ports/protocols would I need to get SWGLF to open incoming and outgoing?

After several months of trying to get a linux box working as a router routing back to school over a vpn connection and it almost working (just can't have more than 1 machine with a connection open to windows file sharing on the server, as the server only sees one session coming from the remote site) I've given up and have decided to look for a commercial solution. We have 2 remote sites with BT business ADSL (one seems to be fixed 2MB and has 5 client machines, the other Rate adaptive at 4.5Mbps and has 12 machines), I really need the client machines to work as if they were on the school network directly. Any sugestions?

They are all connecting through a linux box that is acting as a router so each site only has 1 vpn connection active. The windows server only sees the IP of the linux box.

We have 2 remote sites that need to be connected back to the school network, so I set up RRAS as a VPN server, and got the ports and protocols opened for PPTP (still trying to get L2TP to work externally) and it worked, but only for one machine at a time (as I later found out a problem with PPTP through NAT), so I set up a box with debian with 2 network cards to work as a router (using NAT and masquerading I believe) and got that to connect to the VPN. This almost seems to work, all the machines at the remote site can access machines at the school, apart from when you try to use windows file sharing to access a server, at which point it fails if 2 machines try to access the same server, for example I log one remote machine on and it works fine, I log a second machine on and the first one pops up a message saying I am now working off line as is unavailable. I am assuming this is caused by the fact to the file server this is all coming from the same IP address. I had several machines constantly pinging the server from the remote site and all seemed to work fine, as far as I can tell everything else is working fine. Anyone got any clue as to what I'm need to be doing to get this working?

We block everything by default and only allow programs to run from known locations (Program Files, windows folder, etc).

Yep thats a possibility, but we are having several other problems that would be resolved by having the machines as part of the domain. It would also be useful to be able to access the student machines with our copy of ABTutor control. Also as the linux box runs an older version of dansguardian its not very easy to keep its filter lists in sync with the main proxy in school. Also the kids are just using a single student account a the unit so we have no way of linking them to any activity.

I'm looking for advice on setting up a VPN to link up a remote site to the school network, we have 2 units on an industrial estate on the other side of the town for Engineering and Construction courses, one of these units has a room of computers in with an internet connection, we have locked the machines down with Windows SteadyState but this is causing some problems, for filtering we have a linux based router/firewall/proxy system running (similar to smoothwall can't remember the name), unfortunately the only way to change settings on the linux box (filtering ones mainly) is to physically go to the unit, due to the fact the box uses an older version of dansguardian I cant just copy the filter lists from the main proxy here and the kids have now found ways around the filter. The only real solution I can think of is a VPN that allows us to connect the machines back to the main school network so they are like any other school machine and get their internet feed through the schools proxy. Ideally I would like to do this with out needing to spend any more money, I think I can do this using one of the Windows 2003 servers at school but I am not quite sure as to what I need to be looking at. We have: At school 2 x Windows 2003 R2 servers Several Linux boxes (various distros) 10Mb/s (soon to be 30Mb/s) internet connetion provided by SWGfL At remote Site BT Bussiness ADSL connection (not sure of speed) with BT supplied router Linux box running internet gateway specific distro

Yep heatings off in school here too, which leads to one of the downsides of having an old IT suite as an office, the room is long with single glazed windows running down the length of the longest side, the room has one heater on the central heating, which doesn't do a bad job of keeping the room warm usually, but as its the holidays and we are the only staff in there is no heating in the school. So we have a small 1KW heater to heat the whole room, which doesn't work and at the moment I have to keep alternating it between under the desk to keep my feet warm and above the desk to stop my hands from freezing up. I'm almost tempted to move my workstation to the server room and turn the A/C off.

Just had a teacher in with a HP nx6325 where the catch release latch has broken (just the bit on the outside that you slide to open the laptop), I phoned HP to be told that they can't send the part out but they have to have it in to replace the entire screen unit. Although the technology department have injection molding kit they don't have the skills to make a copy of the part. Anyone know of any places where I'm likely to be able to get a replacement part?

Got this working my changing the permissions on the Address lists, and created a standard Address lists of students for Staff. Now if only this Exchange update would install (it seemed to get picked up from WSUS, and failed disabling all the services) been going for an hour now.

Problem solved, apparently Exchange had decided it would install on the 20GB C: partition, and only had 1.4GB space left, Exchange stops working when you have less than 4GB of space left. Reinstalled it on the D: partition and its working again. Next Question: Any one know how to stop kids getting a list of every email address, and the staff only get a list of staff?

All the exchange services apart from pop3 were up, I have restarted them all but still no change.

Just started working on our new exchange server ready for the switch over during the summer holidays. It was working fine and was happily sending emails between users before, now when ever I attempt to send an email the email just goes straight to the Drafts folder (from OWA) or stays in the outbox (from Outlook 2003) even after I click Send/Receive, this is happening for all users.

OK I installed SP1 for Office which has this turned off by default. I found a page on the Microsoft website that gives some registry keys that should turn it off. http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/ork2003/HA011403041033.aspx

Trying to give everyone Outlook set up to connect to Exchange, created a modified Office install that automatically sets up the account. Everything is working fine, apart from one thing, the first time a user runs Outlook on a new PC it creates the standard "Welcome to Outlook 2003", thus they end up with a multitude of the message in their Inbox. I can't see anyway to turn it off in the custom install wizard. I have also redirected Application Data, which I thought would solve it but apparently not. Any suggestions?

I can't tell you much, as I haven't used Exchange before, and am only running the trial to get up to speed and see what it offers for when we switch over to Server 2003. From what I've seen its quite good.

I've installed the Exchange 2007 management tools on the PDC, but it doesn't seem to have given me anymore functionality in Active Directory Users and Computers . Whilst adding a user from the exchange console works, I really need a way to keep the mailboxes in sync with the users in Active directory, so that when we add a new year to the system they all automatically get email accounts setup.

Am I missing something obvious, but I cant seem to get Exchange to create mailboxes at the same as a new user is created in the active directory.
