Best way to do user profiles windows 10?

Hi,

 

We're moving from w7 to windows 10 education edition and I am thinking about what the best way to do profiles for staff and students is - there are a lot of threads on creating mandatory profiles but I am wondering if there is any other way to do this?

 

We use server 2012r2, and everything is redirected. Can I just leave the path blank? Use normal roaming profiles?

 

Any ideas or observations would be great!

If you leave the profile path blank (in the user Properties/Profile tab) they will have local profiles. These will work, but will be a big hit on local storage resources over time, and can be slow on initial logon.

 

We use local for staff (as they tend to use the same machines) and super mandatory for students (as they move around a lot, and these profiles are very easy to modify).

Thanks for the reply, good plan with the staff users but what is a super mandatory profile and how do I create one in W10? I currently use a mandatory profile in W7 and have found a method for creating man profiles in W10 - is there an extra step to make super mandatory? What are the benefits?

Super mandatory profiles don't allow logon if the network is unavailable. We found this helps with stopping kids pulling network leads to avoid monitoring software etc.

 

User profiles become super-mandatory when the folder name of the profile path ends in .man; for example, \\server\share\mandatoryprofile.man\.

Make sure that you put this new profile in a .v5 container to separate it from your Windows 7 (and 8, 8.1 etc) profiles.

Someone told me that the .v5 will change each time an upgrade to windows 10 is released. Im not too sure how true this was.

More than possible, but it has stayed the same since 10 was released and we've had the major November update since then.
