Simple unmanaged switch/UK plug combo? Kinda like those ethernet-over-power things?

I have a full 24-port gigabit switch, but that's way overkill for what I'm wanting to do. Basically, in my room I have my PC and my XBox 360. The PC is my source of gaming. The XBox is just a glorified DVD Player/Netflix machine that I watch whilst in bed. The thing is, I only did 1 run of Cat6 to each bedroom when I moved in here, so I can't have both plugged in at once. And I'm lazy. I don't like switching network cables around.

 

I've seen those ethernet-over-power sockets that let you extend your network and a lot of them have multiple ports, kinda like these ones, so they also double as a switch or router. What I'm looking for is basically something like that, but only has the switch/router bit, as I have a double power socket right next to the network socket that isn't being used.

 

Anyone know of any? I know I could just get a little 5-port switch but there's nowhere for it to sit so it would have to be on the floor, and then you'd have the power cable trailing, so it would just be a lot tidier if there were a plug/switch combo.

It is? I'm guessing it has holes on the underside for screws, or something, then? Amazon doesn't show me the underside. Still doesn't solve the issue of the power cable trailing, but at least it gets it off the floor.

Edit: Found a photo of the underside. So it does.

 

Any reason you just don't use the plug one and ignore the plug? :p Always good to have spare option haha

They don't have the switch part, as far as I'm aware. As far as I know (I may be wrong..) you need the other plug at the other end fed into your router for those to work, and I'm looking to avoid using EoP if possible.

This is powered by 48v Poe !

So you can power it at the far end and 2 ports have Poe pass through.

I bought one to have a play with and I'm still looking for a practical scenario in where such might be useful.

This could be one of those!

I don't really need PoE, so the extra £25 is just a waste to be honest. The only PoE device I own is a wireless access point from Meraki, but coverage in my house is fine so I don't as tempting as it is, I don't really need to set that up in my room xD

 

Found the 2015 model of NetGear's 5 port GigE switch (GS305-100UKS) for less than the 2002 model I'd found earlier. Job done.

If you put the switch on the wall near the power socket, you can just cable tie the flex up as it's just a power brick

Both Netgear switches I've had now (I had Amazon replace the first one) have been defective, and will randomly drop connection, reconnect, drop, reconnect until power is cycled.

 

No fun :/ Taking recommendations for a replacement. I don't really know what brands are decent any more.

 

Linksys are still owned by Cisco, right? Might have to try one of their switches.

Damn, that is annoying. I find most of the Netgear equipment alright, I have the GS105E switch, which has been fine as a switch. Linksys ironically I have had nothing but problems with, but that was over a decade ago.

Oh. Hmm.. Don't have any experience with Belkin. What about D-Link? Are they still any good?

 

I haven't bought a router or anything in years..

Unfortunately I haven't really gotten the opportunity to use any of the new stuff. Haven't really used a DLink stuff either. BUT I have used them netgear mountable switch's and their pretty good. I have 2 running in my parents house and they seem to be okay.

That reminded me there of the Netgear ADSL router/switch that used to do that like clockwork dropping out on me with its ports dropping (it seemed to be always around 9pm at night), usually at the most critical point of a raid when playing wow
