First big motorbike coming soon... which one?

I had a Hornet 600 for my first bike. Did track days, toured, commuted and weekend runs. Never missed a beat. Have a sports bike now, but still miss the hornet.

I'd say go budget for your first bike, you won't be so upset when you fall off!

 

This is what I am doing... Thinking of maybe getting a BWM F650 GS (like this one, can pick them up much cheaper too) or maybe something a bit different, like this Moto Guzzi.

 

I'll still be keeping my little MSX for fun and commuting though.

 

The BMW is very nice to ride, weight is all low down, which is great for a short rider like me. The guzzi is just something a bit different :-)

 

Edit to add.. I don't think I will actually fall of a bigger bike, but as I am short, I do imagine I'll have al least one "accident" taking out the garage, or at traffic lights/junctions/parking lots when I put my foot down and forget about the extra weight/height! I'm looking for a decent, cheapish big bike that can take a few slow drops with no issue. the BMW is easy to fit crash bars too, which is handy for the slow dropping I am feeling might happen.

If you like the bmw have a look at the Triumph tiger 800, fantastic bike and I've got one with a 28 leg, mine is lowered slightly, fantastic engine and really eats miles, did 300 ish on it up to the lakes and back yesterday.

 

My first big bike was a cbf500, loved it did loads of miles on it without fault, brilliant first bikes.

What about the older 660cc single cylinder MT03? Can be had quite cheaply, are unusual and good fun without being too much of a risk to your licence.

The older MT03 had the same 660cc engine as my XT, which was a lot of fun, but only for short distances, a single is not fun for distance, and the engines knacker out easily!

only when they dont get serviced properly & are being thrashed as well.

oil changes are soo key, i know a mate who has an XT660 tenere which has got over 50K on it and is fine and he goes everywhere on it

No, I'm on CBT at the moment, so riding a Honda XL125V Varadero. I've done my off-road 'big bike conversion' which was basically Mod 1 exercises in a car park and starting proper training for the A licence soon.
