Projector installation training?

Just wondering if this is even a thing?

 

Basically the school always used a third party to install projectors/boards etc, in the last year or so though I've been asked to do more and more of this work myself and whilst I don't mind doing it I'm concerned about H&S/liability having had no training or prior experience of doing it.

 

Does anyone know of any training for this kind of thing or what I should and should not be doing?

 

Have googled a little but not really found anything as yet.

I doubt that there would be specific generic training for this - but usual H&S training would apply - working at height, powertools, lifting and carrying, etc.

 

I know that Smart and Promethean do training courses for installing their kit, though...

Also - make sure your employer has the appropriate insurance for you to do that.

Honestly if you've ever done DIY before it's quite straight forward. Check the surfaces you're drilling into, will you need enforcements, what is the weight of the item you're fitting, what length bolts and what type plugs should you need. Then for projectors it's a case of read the instructions, calculate the distance for the throw to fill the screen, mark out, do! Then put the board up after the projector, then you can align it almost perfect!

So far I've been lucky in that the ones that have needed replacement have been a similar set-up and I've been able to reuse the pole and just replace the mount but I'm aware that a few that are well overdue to expire are likely going to require a completely new install. I'll check on the insurance I'm fairly sure we are covered however as mentioned having had no form of H&S working at heights lifting etc since starting here that may well be invalid

Become familiar with the catalogue of your local fixings specialist and don't be afraid to ask them what fixings you might need, they might be able to save you time by suggesting a chemical fixing over a mechanical or vice-versa!

When I worked for a College and we just started to get IWB and Data Projectors we were paying around £500 per half-day installation (including a lectern and PC as well) and when I took a look at the installs they were not exactly professional with trunking quite litterally, falling off the walls as they hadnt bothered to use any screws to secure it!

 

I said to my boss at the time if he spent some money and purchased a decent set of tools then I could do a better job than that as long as I had someone else to work with who was good at DIY!

 

£2,500 later and a load of DeWalt cordless tools etc. we installed every IWB and DP that the college wanted from then on. All we did was speak to the Estates team for advice on the Aspesos register etc. and the H&S manager watched us climb up and down a ladder and showed us how to check for any damage etc. and then off we went!
