Do any of you guys work in the main School office?

I'm pretty miserable at the moment with things that are happening where I work, so seeing your comments this morning has put a smile on my face.

If I could walk into another job I would happily give a months notice today. I love the school and the vast majority of the people here, but the morale here is rock bottom and unless OFSTED come in and have some Teflon remover things aint gonna get any better.

The problem for me is lack of formal qualifications, I came out of retail management 10 years ago, did some IT training which promised a job at the end of it, which I got, and have been learning on the job ever since and on the whole I know what i'm doing (come here when I'm stuck!). The one drawback is there hasn't been the opportunity to develop with MCSE's etc.

I do dream of becoming a Crofter on the Outer Hebrides though...

 

PM @witch and get her to go through your cv. She will help to highlight 10 years of current experience. There are many of us on here who lack formal IT qualifications (and the one I have is 30 years old and thus valueless)

I'm glad I got an office area when I started. I'd hate to have to work in the main office... people might realise that for large chunks of the day I'm not that busy....

 

To be honest we are at this stage now, but only because things are settling down and working. It's where I always aim to be.

 

Allows us to focus on more development, improvements and planning. Hell I have finally created a list of every cable job I'd like to get done.

4 of us stuck in the server room still (10 years + for me now) and its starting to grate. Back in 2012 asked management if we could relocate to an office virtually next to server room (which was a music store room and meeting room at that time) but was told the head had others plans. Nothing changed. Then they had to move careers in to the space last year due to another building project last year and refuse to entertain the notion it is the best place for us to be based. Latest talk is of moving us to the other side of the school and up on the third floor so as far aaway from server room as possible. Not really pleased with the prospect after so long in here and every other department had offices or moved within that time frame while we looked on!

the first school I worked in had one room for the head, SLT and admin. It seemed to work fine but 2 years on when we got a new head, the first thing he did was put a wall up and give himself a separate office.

Currently in a large office (enough space for about 5 workstations!) with a huge window overlooking the Thames.. but the grapevine tells me that I'm going to be moving into a smaller office with no windows soon, more reminiscent of my old school

Pretty lucky here in that we have 3 offices, one for help desk, stripping down dumping stuff and brew time,a managers office and a quiet office (mostly used by the apprentice in quiet times for assignments etc). ain't no way in hell I'd work in the main reception permanently it's bad enough having to go in there to fix something only for everyone to assume you are a receptionist, five minute jobs end up taking half an hour! on the plus side they always have biscuits etc

When I first started here we were in a portacabin (5 of us) that was absolutely freezing in the winter and boiling in the summer due to the lack of heating and ventilation - the servers were in another part of the school completely. Fortunately a new LRC was built a few years ago and I was able to have a say in the server room and IT office design and even though we have re-organised a couple of times, we do have a very nice working area - and after reading what others have, I feel very fortunate.

 

As for working in the admin office, my biggest fear would be getting roped into all the non-IT stuff - answering the phone, dealing with parents and other visitors and so on.
